9

The number 9 (تسعة, tis‘a) is the ninth single-digit integer, the first odd composite number (3 × 3), and the highest single digit in the decimal system. In Arabic, the glyph ٩ represents this value. In gematria traditions, 9 is the numeration of the letter Ṭā’ (ط), the nineteenth letter of the Arabic alphabet.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Qabalistic Tree, the 19th Path (corresponding to Ṭā’) connects the Sephirah Geburah (Severity, 5) to Chesed (Mercy, 4) via the Tarot Trump The Sun. The number 9 here directly keys to Yesod (the 9th Sephirah, Foundation), the lunar sphere of dreams, sexuality, and the astral body. Thus the numerical value 9 of Ṭā’ aligns the Path of the Sun with the lunar-gateway Sephirah, creating a bridge between solar clarity and the formless potential of the subconscious.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

While the digit 9 itself is not a planet, its Sephirah Yesod is governed by the Moon. In Liber 777, the 9 corresponds to the sphere of the Moon (Levanah) in the column “Sephiroth.” Yet in this table cell—the “Numeration of Arabic Alphabet”—9 is purely a quantitative value. The metaphysical weight comes from its placement on Path 19: the Ṭā’ letter, whose Tarot attribution is The Sun (solar, masculine, vital). The paradox of a lunar number (9) on a solar Path is resolved by understanding that Ṭā’ (value 9) represents the hidden light at the foundation of manifestation.

Historical Context

The Arabic Abjad numeral system assigns numeric values to letters, with Ṭā’ = 9. This system predates Islam and derives from the Phoenician and Aramaic alphabets via Nabataean script. In classical Islamic cosmology, the number 9 holds significance as the number of spheres in the Ptolemaic heavens (the eight spheres of the planets plus the Empyrean or al-‘Arsh, the Throne of God). Similarly, the Baḥr al-Ḥayāt (Ocean of Life) Sufi text notes that 9 symbolizes the nine levels of the soul’s ascent. In Hebrew Qabalah, the letter Teth (ט), ancestor of Arabic Ṭā’, also has the value 9 and is associated with the Tarot Trump Strength and the zodiac sign Leo. Liber 777 explicitly cross-references this: the HTML table for “Numeration of Arabic Alphabet” lists 9 as the value for the 19th Path (the same Path assigned to Teth in Hebrew). Crowley, in 777 Revised, notes that “9 is the number of Yesod, the Foundation; it is the sphere of the Moon and the seat of the Astral Body. The Arabic letter Ṭā’, being the 9th in the Abjad order, is thus the Lunar Foundation in a Solar guise.”

In Liber 777

In the row “Numeration of Arabic Alphabet,” column Path 19 (the 19th Path of the Tree), the cell entry is simply the numeral 9. This digit is not a Sephirah number, but the pure gematric value of the Arabic letter Ṭā’. It links the 19th Path—symbolized by the Sun (Tarot Trump XIX)—to the lunar foundation of Yesod, making it a threshold number for transformation: the point where solar consciousness crystallizes into stable form.
