The Queen Scale of Colour (h) · Path 11

Sky blue

Sky blue is a pale, luminous blue that evokes the clear daytime sky. In the Hermetic Qabalah, it is the Queen Scale colour assigned to Path 11, the path of Aleph, the Fool, and the element Air.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 11 runs from Kether (Crown) to Chokmah (Wisdom). It is the first path on the Tree, representing the primal impulse of creation—the breath of Air that carries the Fool’s unbound potential. The Queen Scale (the second of the four colour scales, associated with the feminine, receptive aspect of the sephiroth) paints this path in sky blue, a colour that mirrors the infinite, transparent vault of heaven.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The letter Aleph, attributed to Path 11, corresponds to the element Air. In the Tarot, Aleph is the Fool, the zero card that precedes all number. Sky blue thus carries the qualities of Air: intellect, communication, freedom, and the formless spirit that moves before manifestation. No planet rules this path; it is purely elemental.

Historical context

The four colour scales used in Liber 777 were codified by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, drawing on the Sepher Yetzirah and Renaissance Qabalistic colour systems. The Queen Scale (sometimes called the Scale of the Queen or the Feminine Scale) is the second of these, and its colours are considered the “reflected” or “passive” aspect of the divine light. Sky blue appears in this scale for Path 11, and also—in other scales—for Path 14 (Daleth, Venus) and Path 28 (Tzaddi, Aquarius), but its primary Qabalistic home is the Air path. Aleister Crowley, in The Book of Thoth, describes the Fool as “the airy, subtle, and volatile” essence, and the sky blue colour reinforces the sense of limitless, uncoloured potential. In the 777 table, the colour is listed simply as “Sky blue,” without further qualification, indicating its purity and direct correspondence to the elemental Air.

In Liber 777

At the intersection of the Queen Scale column and Path 11, the table entry reads “Sky blue.” It stands as the colour of the Fool’s garment, the sky through which he steps, and the breath that carries him into the abyss of Chokmah.
