The Queen Scale of Colour (h) · Path 15

Red

Red is a primary color, the longest wavelength visible to the human eye, symbolizing life, blood, fire, and passion. In the Queen Scale of Colour (the passive, formative scale of the Yetziratic world) as used in Liber 777, Red is assigned to Path 15—the path of Aleph, the Fool, associated with the element Air. This attribution may seem paradoxical, as Air is conventionally linked to yellow; however, the Queen Scale represents the receptive, lunar aspect of the path, and here Red signifies the raw vitality and impulsive energy that underlies the Fool’s seemingly aimless journey.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 15 connects Kether (Crown) to Chokmah (Wisdom) on the Tree of Life. It is the first path of the Middle Pillar, representing the primordial breath or spirit that initiates creation. The Queen Scale color Red on this path emphasizes the dynamic, unformed potential that rushes from the source into the first outflow of wisdom. Unlike the King Scale (which uses yellow for the same path), the Queen Scale’s Red suggests a more instinctual, emotional charge—the raw ‘yes’ of existence before differentiation.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Path 15 is attributed to the Hebrew letter Aleph, which corresponds to the element Air and the astrological sign of Aquarius (in some systems) or simply the element itself. The planet Uranus is also associated with Aleph in later Thelemic developments. Red here does not derive from a planetary color but from the elemental force of Air in its most primal, unformed state—the ‘wind’ that carries the spark of life. In the Queen Scale, this Red is often described as a brilliant, fiery scarlet, reflecting the volatile and creative nature of Air when it first emerges from the void.

Historical context

The color scales used in Liber 777 were systematized by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, drawing on earlier Kabbalistic and alchemical traditions. The Queen Scale (also called the ‘Passive Scale’ or ‘Yetziratic Scale’) is one of four major color scales assigned to each Sephirah and Path. It represents the world of formation (Yetzirah) and the feminine, receptive aspect of the divine. The assignment of Red to Path 15 appears in the original Golden Dawn manuscripts and was later codified by Aleister Crowley in Liber 777 (first published 1909). Crowley’s commentary notes that the Queen Scale colors often invert or complement the King Scale: where the King Scale for Aleph is bright yellow (Air’s active color), the Queen Scale gives Red—the color of the first Sephirah (Kether) in the King Scale, suggesting a direct channel of raw force from the Crown into the path. This Red is also echoed in the Tarot card of The Fool, which in the Golden Dawn tradition depicts a figure wearing red garments, symbolizing the untamed life-force that drives the Fool’s leap into the unknown.

In broader occult symbolism, Red has long been associated with the element of Fire, not Air. The Golden Dawn’s departure from this convention for Path 15 highlights the synthetic nature of the color scales: they are not purely elemental but reflect the interplay of forces on each level. The Red of Path 15 is thus a ‘fire within air’—the spark of life that moves the wind. This attribution is consistent with the Queen Scale’s use of Red for other paths of primal energy, such as Path 27 (which corresponds to Peh, Mars), where Red appears again but with a more martial connotation.

In Liber 777

In the table of the Queen Scale of Colour (column h) at step 15 (Path 15), the entry is simply ‘Red’. This single word carries the weight of the entire path: the undifferentiated, vital force that precedes all form, the color of blood and birth, the first vibration of the created universe in its most receptive aspect.
