The Queen Scale of Colour (h) · Path 25

Yellow

Yellow is the colour of sunlight, gold, and the fixed, radiant centre of the solar system. In the scale of the Queen (the fourth colour scale, representing the passive, formative aspect of each Sephirothic level), Yellow is the tone assigned to Tiphereth—Beauty, the sixth Sephirah, the heart of the Tree of Life. The word "yellow" derives from Old English geolu, geolwe, akin to Old High German gelo and Latin helvus (dun, yellowish), all pointing to a root sense of gleaming or shining.

Position on the Tree of Life

Yellow on Path 25 occupies the Queen Scale of Colour for Tiphereth, the Sephirah that balances and harmonises the supernal and lower forces. In the colour scales of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Queen Scale is the "formative" level, the colour as it appears in Yetzirah (the formative world). Tiphereth itself is often depicted in gold or solar yellow, and on Path 25—specifically the path joining Tiphereth to Keter—the Queen Scale colour is Yellow, reflecting the path’s function as a conduit of refined, conscious beauty.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Yellow belongs to the Sun (Sol) in its most general planetary attribution, and to the solar current that flows through Tiphereth. In the Liber 777 schema, the Sun is attributed to Tiphereth, and yellow/gold is its colour. The astrological nature is fixed, life-giving, and central—the Sun as the heart of the heavens, bestowing clarity, vitality, and the gold of the alchemical philosopher’s stone.

Historical context

In Western esoteric colour theory—particularly as systematised by the Golden Dawn and later by Aleister Crowley in Liber 777—the four colour scales derive from the four worlds of Qabalah. The King Scale (Atziluth), Queen Scale (Beriah), Emperor Scale (Yetzirah), and Empress Scale (Assiah) give a graduated series of correspondences for each Sephirah and path. The Queen Scale is the colour of the active force in the world of creation, a more subtle and refined expression than the King’s pure white brilliance. Yellow here is not merely the spectrum colour but the modulated, receptive radiance that builds the form of beauty.

Throughout alchemical and Hermetic tradition, yellow—especially the yellow of gold, sulphur, and the Sun—signifies the fixed, incorruptible essence. The Rosicrucian and Hermetic orders of the 19th century adopted these colour attributions for rituals, talismans, and the design of the Tree of Life diagram itself. The yellow of Tiphereth’s Queen Scale is the colour of the Tiphareth grade in the Golden Dawn’s 5=6 degree, where the Adept experiences the vision of the beauty of the Microprosopus.

Manifestation in the table

In Liber 777, Table XVI, Row 25, the Queen Scale colour for Path 25 is simply Yellow. It stands in correspondence with the solar and Tipherethic current, grounded in the formative world, ready to be applied in the construction of the Temple, the vestments, and the visual keys of the Path.
