I. of the Mediating Influence

I. of the Mediating Influence is the sixth degree of intelligence along the Paths of the Sepher Yetzirah, corresponding to the sephirah Tiphereth. Translating the Hebrew Sekhel Hameshpi'a, its name indicates a quality of active conveyance—an intelligence that passes influence from higher to lower realms, balancing and harmonizing the flow of divine force.

Position on the Tree of Life

The Mediating Influence occupies the sixth step (Tiphereth) on the scale of the Paths of the Sepher Yetzirah. As Tiphereth is the central sephirah of beauty and harmony, this intelligence functions as the pivotal conduit between the supernal triad (Keter, Chokmah, Binah) and the formative worlds below. It mediates the abstract light of wisdom, transforming it into structured, radiant force.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the schema of Liber 777, the I. of the Mediating Influence aligns with the solar energy of Tiphereth—the Sun itself. This correspondence underscores the mediating function: as the Sun stands at the center of the planetary spheres, so this intelligence stands at the center of the Tree, receiving and transmitting influence in a balanced, life-giving manner.

Historical context

The concept of a “mediating” intelligence appears in early Kabbalistic texts that enumerate the thirty-two paths of wisdom. The Sefer Yetzirah itself presents these paths as channels of creation, but the specific attribution of names to each degree—such as “Mediating Influence”—arises from later medieval and Renaissance commentary, particularly in the tradition of the Bahir and the Zohar. By the 16th century, Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria systematized these correspondences, linking each path to specific sephirot and psychological or cosmological functions. The I. of the Mediating Influence thus represents a developed understanding of Tiphereth as the balancing center—the point where mercy (Chesed) and severity (Geburah) are harmonized, and from which the lower structure (Netzach, Hod, Yesod, Malkuth) receives its directives.

Role in Liber 777

In Aleister Crowley’s Liber 777, the I. of the Mediating Influence appears in Table XIII (The Paths of the Sepher Yetzirah) at step 6. It is the sixth of thirty-two named intelligences, placed at the heart of the Paths system, reflecting the central role of Tiphereth as the sun-like harmonizer. This intelligence is not merely passive reception but active equilibrium—the essential mechanism by which the higher lights are made accessible to the whole structure of creation.
