The Greek Alphabet · Path 11
Α α
Alpha (Α α) is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, derived from the Phoenician letter aleph, meaning 'ox' or 'leader.' It symbolizes the beginning, the primary source, and the unmanifested unity from which all manifestation proceeds. In the Greek isopsephy system, its value is 1.
Position on the Tree of Life
Alpha corresponds to Path 11, the eleventh path of the Tree of Life. This path connects Chokmah (Wisdom) to Binah (Understanding), representing the first movement of creative force from pure potential into the first structured form of duality. As the initial letter, Alpha embodies the raw, undifferentiated energy that initiates this dynamic flow.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the Hermetic Qabalah, Alpha is associated with the element of Air, specifically the first and most subtle aspect of Air, sometimes called the 'Air of Air.' This correspondence links Alpha to the intellectual, communicative, and formative principles—the breath that carries the Word of creation. It is not directly tied to a planet but to the primordial atmosphere that precedes all planetary spheres.
Historical context
Alpha’s history is deeply rooted in the development of the Greek alphabet, which was adapted from the Phoenician script around the 8th century BCE. The Phoenician aleph originally represented a glottal stop and was associated with the ox, a symbol of strength and leadership. The Greeks repurposed it as a vowel, a revolutionary shift that made the alphabet more precise for representing spoken language. In Greek philosophy, Alpha became a symbol of the archē—the first principle or origin of all things. The Pythagorean tradition held that the monad, represented by Alpha, is the source of all numbers and forms. In the New Testament, Christ declares, 'I am the Alpha and the Omega' (Revelation 1:8), identifying himself as the beginning and end of all creation. This phrase was later adopted into Christian iconography and liturgy, often inscribed on altars and tombs. In the magical tradition, Alpha is inscribed on talismans and amulets to invoke beginnings, protection, and the power of the first cause.
In Liber 777, Alpha appears on Path 11 of the Greek Alphabet table, where it is the first of the 22 letters. Its placement at the head of the path reflects its role as the initiator of the sequence, corresponding to the first step of the Fool’s journey through the Tarot trumps. The letter’s shape—a simple, open form—visually echoes its nature as an unbroken, originating force.
