Ρ ρ

Rho (Ρ ρ) is the seventeenth letter of the Greek alphabet, with a numerical value of 100. Its name derives from the Semitic rēš, meaning "head," and its form is a development of the Phoenician letter. In the Greek system, Rho is the direct equivalent of the Hebrew Resh (ר), the letter of the Sun, and thus carries the solar, radiant, and life-giving qualities of that star. It is the letter of the Father, of the generative principle, and of the active, creative force that manifests as light and heat.

Position on the Tree of Life

Rho is assigned to Path 30, which connects the sephiroth of Tiphereth (Beauty) and Hod (Splendor). This path is the Way of the Sun, a channel of direct, vital energy that descends from the central, harmonizing sphere of the Sun to the sphere of intellect and communication. It is a path of illumination, of the clear, conscious light of the self, and of the power of the will to manifest in form.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

The primary correspondence of Rho is the Sun, the celestial body that gives life and light. This is not the Sun as a mere physical object, but as the symbol of the central Self, the divine spark within, the source of individual consciousness and the will to be. In this role, Rho is associated with the solar deities of all traditions: Helios, Apollo, Ra, and the like. It is the letter of the King, the Father, and the Hero.

Historical context

The identification of Rho with the Sun is ancient and consistent across the Western esoteric tradition. In the Hebrew alphabet, Resh (ר) is the head, the letter of the Sun, and the first letter of the word Rosh (head). The Greek alphabet, as a direct descendant of the Phoenician, preserved this attribution. The numerical value of 100 is significant: it is the square of 10 (Malkuth), representing the perfection of the material world, and the number of the completion of a cycle. In the Sepher Yetzirah, Resh is one of the twelve simple letters, attributed to the month of Tammuz (the summer solstice) and the sense of sight. In the Greek magical papyri, the letter Rho is used as a symbol for the Sun and for the solar god.

The letter's form itself is evocative: the circle with a tail, a solar disk with a ray of light or a stem of life. This is the image of the Sun as the source of all life, the circle of eternity with a line of manifestation. In the Qabalistic system of Liber 777, the solar attribution is fixed, and the letter Rho is the key to the Path of the Sun.

Closing

In the table of Liber 777, at the scale step of Path 30, the Greek letter Ρ ρ (Rho) is the direct correspondence of the Hebrew Resh, the solar path, and the number 100. It is the letter of the Sun, the Father, and the active, creative principle of the universe.
