ξ (σ)
Sigma (Σ, σ, ς) is the eighteenth letter of the Greek alphabet, with a numeric value of 200. Its name derives from the Phoenician samekh, meaning 'support' or 'pillar,' and it represents the sibilant sound /s/. In the Greek isopsephy system, 200 is the number of the letter, and it is associated with the element of Water in some esoteric traditions, though its primary attribution in the Golden Dawn system is to the Path of Samekh, the twenty-second Hebrew letter, which corresponds to the zodiacal sign of Sagittarius.
Position on the Tree of Life
Sigma occupies the twenty-fifth Path on the Tree of Life, the Path of Samekh (ס). This Path connects the sephirah Netzach (Victory, sphere of Venus) to Yesod (Foundation, sphere of the Moon). As a Path, it represents the transformative journey of the archer's arrow—the spiritual aspiration that pierces the veil of illusion, leading from the emotional stability of Netzach to the lunar, receptive foundation of Yesod. The letter Sigma, with its serpentine form, echoes the winding, initiatory nature of this Path.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the Golden Dawn system, the Path of Samekh is attributed to the zodiacal sign of Sagittarius (the Archer), ruled by Jupiter. This correspondence is reflected in the symbolic meaning of Sigma: the arrow of aspiration, the centaur's bow, and the quest for higher knowledge. The number 200, when reduced (2+0+0=2), points to Chokmah (Wisdom), the second sephirah, further linking Sigma to the primal, creative force of the divine will.
Historical context
The Greek letter Sigma has a rich history. Its Phoenician ancestor, samekh, meant 'fish' or 'support,' and its shape evolved from a vertical line with three horizontal strokes (𐤎) to the angular Σ of the classical Greek alphabet. The final form (ς) is a medieval innovation, used only at the end of words. In Greek magical papyri, Sigma appears as a symbol of the serpent, the cosmic dragon, and the Ouroboros—the self-devouring serpent that represents eternity and the cycle of death and rebirth. The letter's numeric value of 200 is also significant in the Isopsephy of the Name: the Greek word for 'serpent' (ὄφις, ophis) has a value of 700, while 'dragon' (δράκων, drakōn) totals 1,200, both multiples of 200, reinforcing the serpentine symbolism.
In the Chaldean Oracles, the number 200 is associated with the 'second intellect' or the 'demiurgic mind,' which shapes the material world. This aligns with the Path of Samekh as the bridge between the higher and lower worlds. The letter Sigma, therefore, is not merely a phonetic symbol but a glyph of transformation, aspiration, and the serpentine wisdom that guides the initiate through the labyrinth of the Tree of Life.
In Liber 777, Sigma appears at the twenty-fifth step of the Greek Alphabet column, corresponding to the Path of Samekh. Its placement here, between the letters Nu (Path 24) and Omicron (Path 26), underscores its role as a pivotal point in the alphabet—a letter that both closes the first half of the alphabet (Alpha to Sigma) and opens the second half (Sigma to Omega). This duality reflects the Path's function as a threshold between the personal and the cosmic, the microcosm and the macrocosm.
