Γ γ
Γ γ, the third letter of the Greek alphabet, carries the numeric value 3 and the sound /g/ (as in “go”) in classical pronunciation. Its name, gamma, derives from the Phoenician letter gimel, meaning “camel.” In Greek, the word γράμμα (gramma)—“letter” or “writing”—shares this root, and gamma often stands for the concept of a right angle or the gamma function in more recent sciences. Within the esoteric traditions, gamma is the glyph of the triad, of the first three-dimensional form, and of the Gnostic Abrasax, whose name sums to 365 via gamma’s inclusion in the isopsephic count.
Position on the Tree of Life
In the schema of Liber 777, gamma corresponds to Path 13, which connects Kether (the Crown) to Tiphareth (Beauty). This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Gimel, whose shape suggests the camel carrying the seeker across the Abyss. As the Greek gamma, this path governs the luminous intelligence of the Unity—the spiritual current that unites the primal source with the heart of the microcosm. The number 3, shared by gamma, denotes synthesis and the initial step into manifestation.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
No specific astrological or planetary attribution is assigned to γ in the Greek Alphabet row of 777. The letter itself, however, is intimately linked to the number 3 and to the triad of the Supernal Triangle in Qabalah, echoing the first three Sephiroth. Through its position on Path 13, it shares the lunar attribution of Gimel (the Moon card in the Tarot), but the Greek letter γ as such holds no direct celestial correspondence in this table.
Historical context
The Greek alphabet, derived from Phoenician around the 9th century BCE, adapted the shape of gimel (which originally depicted a throwing-stick or camel’s neck) into the angular Γ γ. The Etruscans transmitted this letter to the Romans, who modified it into the curved C and later G. In Hellenistic magical traditions, gamma was engraved on talismans for its geometric power—the gamma cross (a pattern of four Gammas) was used as a protective symbol in early Christian and Gnostics communities. The philosopher and occultist Pythagoras treated gamma as emblematic of the triad: the first perfect number, encompassing beginning, middle, and end. Later, in the Greek Magical Papyri, the letter appears as a divine character, sometimes written with a numerical value in amuletic formulas. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, drawing on earlier Kabbalistic and classical sources, integrated gamma into the structure of the 32 paths, giving Path 13 the title “The Luminous Intelligence” and linking it to the Hebrew Gimel and its associated Tarot trump. The gamma is also the first letter of the word Gnosis (γνῶσις), which encodes the secret knowledge that the path itself imparts.
In the table at row LIII, scale step 13, the Greek letter Γ γ is listed as the direct correspondence of Path 13, the Moon Path, affirming its role as the conduit between the Crown and the heart of the Sephirotic system. No other letter or symbol occupies this cell—gamma stands alone as the token of the triad and the bridge across the abyss.
