Ζ ζ
Ζ ζ represents the sixth letter of the Greek alphabet, Zeta. Its numeric value is seven. The letter’s name derives from the Semitic zayin, meaning “weapon” or “sword,” and its form likely evolved from the Phoenician letter of the same name. In Classical Greek, Zeta denoted a voiced affricate /zd/ or /dz/, and later in Koine, a simple /z/. Zeta is the root of the Latin letter Z.
Position on the Tree of Life
Zeta occupies Path 17 on the Tree of Life. This path connects Binah (Understanding) to Tiphareth (Beauty), crossing the Abyss in its downward flow. In Crowley’s schema, the path corresponds to the Tarot card The Star, attributed to the Hebrew letter Tzaddi. The displacement is deliberate: Tzaddi is not the usual match for The Star, but Crowley assigns Tzaddi to The Star and Zeta to the Path 17 slot, aligning with the Greek alphabet sequence. The number 17 — a sum of 10 (Malkuth) and 7 (Zeta’s own value) — hints at the path’s role in uniting the material and the spiritual.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
No direct astrological or planetary attribution is given for Zeta alone in the Liber 777 Greek alphabet column. The planetary assignments in the system belong to the Hebrew letters, not the Greek. However, because Zeta shares the Path 17 position with Tzaddi on the Hebrew side, it draws the astrological correspondence of Aquarius — the fixed, airy sign associated with Tzaddi in the 777 tables. The Star card, ruled by Aquarius, reinforces this: a figure pours water from two jars, one into a pool, one onto land, symbolizing the pouring forth of cosmic influence. Zeta, as the letter of Path 17, inherits this fluid, electric, and revolutionary symbolism.
Historical context
Zeta’s history is inextricable from the Greek alphabet’s adaptation of the Phoenician script around the 9th century BCE. The Phoenician zayin represented a voiced sibilant /z/, which the Greeks adopted and modified. Uniquely among Greek letters, Zeta’s position in the alphabet shifted over time: in some archaic dialects, it occupied the sixth slot but was later moved to the end of the alphabet in some local variants. The letter’s numeric value 7 — the number of the planets known to antiquity, the days of the week, and the classical “wandering stars” — lent it a mystical aura. In Pythagorean number symbolism, 7 was the “septenary,” the number of the virgin (parthenos, as in the goddess Athena), and the sum of 3 (the triad) and 4 (the tetrad), representing the union of heaven and earth. The 7-stringed lyre of Apollo also echoed this number. In gnostic and hermetic texts, Zeta’s shape — like a bent sword — evoked the weapon of separation and synthesis, cutting the One into Many and then reuniting.
In Liber 777
At Path 17 in the Greek Alphabet row of Liber 777, the cell contains the single letter Ζ ζ. The corresponding Hebrew letter is Tzaddi, and the associated Tarot trump is The Star. The letter stands alone here, stripped of its usual numeric and phonetic context, serving as a glyph for the path’s energy: the weapon that divides and the star that guides, the seventh letter on the seventeenth path, a signature for the descent of the Aquarian current into the heart of the Sun.
