Rashith ha-Gilgalim

Rashith ha-Gilgalim (ראשית הגילגלים) is a Hebrew phrase meaning "the Beginning of the Whirlings" or "the Ensis of the Revolutions." It designates the Primum Mobile in the Qabalistic cosmos—the outermost sphere of motion encircling the fixed stars, itself the first swirl of differentiated matter within the pure, formless expanse of Assiah (the material World of Action). In the system of Liber 777, it is the 0–step of the scale of the Heavens of Assiah, the origin-point from which all subsequent spheres (Mazloth, Shabbathai, and the planetary spheres down through Malkuth) spin off.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, Rashith ha-Gilgalim is assigned to the Sephirah Kether of Assiah—the first swirl of the material universe, analogous to the highest crown of the physical world. Its position on the Thirty‑Second Paths is that of the 0–step, the zero before enumeration, representing the initial impulse of motion that precedes all fixed form.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Astrologically, Rashith ha-Gilgalim is associated with the forces of revolution and change that transcend the planetary spheres—often linked to the Lunar Nodes in Western astrology (Rahu, the Head of the Dragon) or to the trans‑Saturnine concept of the Primum Mobile itself, the source of all mundane rotation. It is not a planet but the swirl that generates planetary differentiation.

Historical Context

The term appears in the Zohar (e.g., Genesis I, 15b) and is systematized by later Qabalists such as Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria. In Jacob’s Ladder symbolism, the Whirlings correspond to the first movement of the Divine upon the face of the deep, before any days of creation are counted. The Gersonides (14th c.) identified the Primum Mobile with the celestial sphere responsible for the daily rotation of the fixed stars, but in Qabalah the Rashith ha-Gilgalim is not a physical sphere but a metaphysical / magical vortex: the outermost of the “Heavens of Assiah,” containing within it the “Heaven of the Fixed Stars” (Mazloth) and the planetary heavens.

In 777, this step stands at the head of column VI, The Heavens of Assiah, and provides the zero reference for the whole scale of material worlds—a state of raw, undirected motion before the active (Chokmah) and passive (Binah) polarities emerge.

Correspondences in Liber 777

At this step (scale: 0–zero), the Heavens of Assiah table lists Rashith ha-Gilgalim as the single subject of the cell. The sibling correspondences at higher steps (2–32) refer to the subsequent spheres—Mazloth, Shabbathai, the planetary spheres, and the zodiacal signs—but this cell is the first, the “swirl” that contains all heavenly origins in potentia.
