Sarton
Sarton is an obscure Hebrew term found in the Zohar and later Qabalistic writings, functioning as an alternative or epithet for the planet Saturn. The word is derived from the root sur, meaning to turn aside or remove, and carries the connotation of a hidden, secret, or withdrawn influence—distinct from the more familiar astrological name Shabbathai (the Resting One).
Position on the Tree of Life
Sarton corresponds to the 18th path, placed between Binah (Understanding) and Geburah (Severity) on the Tree of Life. This path, numbered 18 in the Thirty-Two Paths of Wisdom, links the third and fifth Sephiroth, bridging the passive, formative influence of Binah with the dynamic, judgmental force of Geburah. In some arrangements, the path is also associated with the zodiacal sign of Cancer, further complicating its Saturnine attribution.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In Liber 777, Sarton is placed in the column of the Heavens of Assiah—the material world—rather than the more abstract planetary spheres. This aligns Sarton with the most dense, concrete expression of Saturnine energy: limitation, crystallization, and the harshest forms of restriction. While Shabbathai refers to Saturn in its cosmic, spiritual sense, Sarton represents Saturn’s heaviest, most material manifestation—the slow, grinding weight of time and death in the physical universe.
Historical context
The most significant early source for Sarton is the Zohar (II, 76b–77a), where it appears in a passage describing the seven heavens of the Qabalistic cosmos. The Zohar names Shabbathai as the seventh and highest heaven (the throne of God), while Sarton is listed as the sixth heaven—immediately below the primal Rest. This ordering gives Sarton a dual character: it is both a Saturnine heaven (the same planetary principle) yet distinct enough to occupy a separate celestial level, implying a subordinate or more specific function.
Later Qabalists, notably Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria, attempted to reconcile the Zoharic list with the Aristotelian-Ptolemaic planetary spheres. Cordovero, in his Pardes Rimonim, identifies Sarton with the sphere of Saturn itself when considered in its most contracted, “Assiatic” state—the material foundation upon which the higher spiritual structures rest. In the Lurianic tradition, Sarton is sometimes linked to the concept of Tzimtzum (the divine contraction), as the name suggests a turning away or withdrawal of light necessary for creation.
The 18th path attribution in the Tree of Life further developed in the Hermetic Qabalah of the Golden Dawn and later Aleister Crowley’s 777. Here, Sarton’s association with Cancer (via the path’s zodiacal link) creates a paradoxical pairing: Saturn’s heavy, contracting nature joined with Cancer’s lunar, receptive, and preservative qualities. This synthesis suggests a function of Saturnine limitation that operates through the emotional, instinctual matrix of the Moon’s sphere—birth, death, and the cycles of material existence.
Closing
In table 777, Sarton occupies cell 18 of column VI (The Heavens of Assiah), standing as the most inert, hidden, and physical expression of Saturn among the planetary heavens, distinct from its spiritual counterpart Shabbathai in Binah.
