Shemesh

Shemesh is the Hebrew name for the Sun, the sixth Heaven of Assiah, the material world. Its root, sh-m-sh, means 'to serve' or 'to minister,' signifying the Sun's role as the servant of the divine will, pouring forth light, life, and consciousness into the densest plane of existence. In the Qabalistic cosmology of the Heavens of Assiah, Shemesh is not the spiritual Sun of Tiphareth but its physical and astral counterpart—the radiant heart of the material universe, the source of all warmth, growth, and visible order.

Position on the Tree of Life

Shemesh corresponds to the sixth Sephirah, Tiphareth (Beauty), on the Tree of Life. As the Heaven of Assiah at this level, it represents the manifestation of solar harmony and sacrifice in the physical world. It is the sphere of the Son, the Redeemer, and the central point of equilibrium between the upper and lower Sephiroth.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Astrologically, Shemesh is the Sun, the luminary of selfhood, vitality, and authority. In the Heavens of Assiah, this solar energy is not abstract but concrete: the Sun as the giver of measurable light, the ruler of the day, and the governor of the fixed star that sustains all life on Earth. Its metal is gold, its color is yellow or gold, and its number is 6.

Historical context

The name Shemesh appears frequently in the Hebrew Bible, most notably in Psalm 19:5: 'The sun (shemesh) rejoices as a strong man to run a race.' In the Zohar, Shemesh is identified with the 'great light' of Genesis 1:16, which governs the day and is attended by the angelic order of the Ophanim (the Wheels). The Talmud (Bava Batra 74b) describes the sun's path through the firmament as a servant of God, a theme echoed in the Kabbalistic tradition where Shemesh is the garment of Tiphareth in the world of Assiah. In the Sepher Yetzirah, the Sun is assigned to the letter Resh, the head, and to the direction of the south. In the Hermetic tradition, Shemesh corresponds to the alchemical gold, the philosopher's stone in its solar aspect, and the 'Sun of the Wise' that shines in the darkness of matter.

In the table of Liber 777, Shemesh is the sixth Heaven of Assiah, the material counterpart of Tiphareth. It stands as the radiant center of the physical universe, the source of all visible light and life, and the symbol of the divine will made manifest in the world of action.
