Heart
The heart is the muscular organ that pumps blood through the circulatory system, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues and removing waste. Etymologically, the word derives from Old English heorte, from Proto-Germanic *hertô, and ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European root *ḱerd- (heart). Across cultures, the heart has been far more than a biological pump: it is the universal symbol of life, love, courage, and the core of the self.
Position on the Tree of Life
In the Qabalistic system of Liber 777, the heart is assigned to Path 19, which connects the sephiroth Hod (Splendor) and Netzach (Victory) on the Tree of Life. This path is governed by the Hebrew letter Teth (ט), meaning “serpent” or “snake,” and is associated with the zodiac sign Leo and the Sun. The heart’s placement here underscores its role as a center of vital warmth and solar radiance, a point of balance between intellectual analysis (Hod) and emotional drive (Netzach).
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
Path 19’s astrological sign is Leo, a fixed fire sign ruled by the Sun. The Sun itself is the planetary correspondence of this path. In traditional astrology, the Sun governs the heart and the vital force (the prana or pneuma). The heart’s rhythmic beat mirrors the Sun’s diurnal cycle, and its fiery nature aligns with Leo’s courage and generosity. In alchemical symbolism, the heart is the furnace of the body, where the blood is refined and the spirit is kindled.
Historical Context
The heart has been venerated as the seat of the soul since antiquity. In ancient Egypt, the heart (ib) was the only organ left in the body during mummification, as it was believed to be the center of thought, memory, and emotion. The “Weighing of the Heart” ceremony judged the deceased’s moral worth. In Greek thought, Aristotle considered the heart the primary organ of intelligence, with the brain serving only to cool the blood. The Stoics located the hegemonikon (ruling faculty) in the heart. Galen later revised this, but the heart remained the emblem of emotion in medieval medicine and poetry.
In the Hermetic and Qabalistic traditions, the heart is the microcosmic Sun. The Sefer Yetzirah describes the heart as the “king” of the organs, ruling over the body’s functions. The Zohar speaks of the heart as the dwelling place of the neshamah (divine soul). In Christian mysticism, the Sacred Heart of Jesus symbolizes divine love and compassion. The heart’s correspondence to Path 19 in Liber 777 ties it directly to the solar current of Teth, the serpent of wisdom that coils around the Tree of Life.
The Heart in Liber 777
In the table of Liber 777, under the row “The Human Body” (CLXXXII), the heart appears at scale step 19, the only organ assigned to that path. Its sibling correspondences (e.g., lungs on Path 17, stomach on Path 18, back on Path 20) show a systematic mapping of the human body onto the 32 paths of the Tree. The heart’s unique position on Path 19 emphasizes its centrality: it is the fiery, solar core from which life’s pulse emanates, bridging the lower and upper aspects of the self.
