The Back

The back is the posterior, dorsal surface of the human torso, extending from the base of the skull and shoulders down to the hips. Etymologically, the word derives from the Old English bæc, sharing roots with the concept of a ridge or what is behind. In the human body, the back is the structural axis: it houses and protects the spinal cord, provides the attachment points for the major muscles of posture and movement, and carries the load of the entire upper body through the vertebral column and pelvis.

Path 20 on the Tree of Life

The back corresponds to Path 20, the 20th path on the Tree of Life. This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Shin (ש), which means "tooth" and carries the symbolism of fire, divinity, and the transformative, consuming power of spirit. The back, as the body's central support and the conduit for the spinal cord—the primary physical link between the brain and the body—mirrors the role of Path 20 as a channel for the descent of the divine fire into the material world. It represents the physical "backbone" of existence, the solid structure that allows for uprightness, direction, and the transmission of will (from the head) to action (in the limbs).

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

While the back itself is not a planet or sign in the strict astrological sense of Liber 777, its correspondence with Path 20 links it to the element of Fire in its most spiritualized form (the Fire of Shin). In the overall schema of the human body, the back serves as a passive receiver and transmitter, akin to the fixed, structural quality of the Earth signs, but its energetic function is more akin to the integrative, polarizing power of the Sun—the central axis around which the system rotates.

Historical Context

Within the Western Esoteric Tradition, the back has a layered symbolic history. In ancient Egyptian religion, the Djed pillar (often called the "backbone of Osiris") was a primary symbol of stability, resurrection, and the enduring power of the god. It represented the spinal column of Osiris, which, when raised, gave life to the land. This concept directly informs the Hermetic and Kabbalistic view of the human body as a microcosm of the Tree of Life, where the spinal column is the central pillar of divinity (the Middle Pillar). In the Zohar, the spine is said to be the "Tree of Life" in the human body, transmitting the energy from the sephiroth. Liber 777 codifies this, placing the back specifically on a path that requires the integration of the higher and lower centers of the body.

The Back in Liber 777

In Liber 777, the back is placed at the 20th step on the scale of the human body (Path 20), a point of equilibrium and hidden strength. It is the silent structural counterpart to the more active and expressive parts of the anatomy listed on the adjacent paths (Heart, Lungs, Stomach). The back's inclusion here affirms that the physical support and the channel of spiritual energy (the spine) are considered a distinct, crucial component of the divine anatomy, equal in importance to the more visible organs of the front of the body.
