Liver
The liver is the largest internal organ and the primary chemical factory of the body, responsible for detoxification, protein synthesis, and the production of bile. In Greek, its name hēpar (ἧπαρ) is related to hēdonē (ἡδονή, pleasure), reflecting the ancient belief that the liver was the seat of the passions and the lower soul. This etymology underscores its role as the crucible of desire and vital heat, a concept central to its placement in the Hermetic Qabalah.
Position on the Tree of Life
The liver corresponds to the 22nd Path, which connects the Sephirah of Geburah (Severity, Mars) to Chesed (Mercy, Jupiter). This Path is associated with the Hebrew letter Teth (ט), meaning serpent or womb, and the zodiacal sign of Leo. The liver’s function—transforming raw nutrients into usable energy while filtering out toxins—mirrors the alchemical operation of Separatio: the fiery digestion that separates the pure from the impure, the essential from the waste.
Astrological and Planetary Correspondence
In the 777 system, the liver is governed by the planet Mars, the celestial embodiment of force, aggression, and purification. This aligns with the organ’s role in metabolizing substances and its association with anger and courage in classical humoral theory. The liver’s heat and redness (due to its high blood content) further echo the Martian principle of active, transformative fire.
Historical Context
Ancient Babylonian and Etruscan diviners practiced hepatoscopy—the inspection of a sacrificial animal’s liver—to read the will of the gods. The liver was considered the mirror of the cosmos, its lobes and markings interpreted as omens. In Greek medicine, Galen taught that the liver was the origin of the veins and the seat of the natural spirit (pneuma physikon), responsible for nutrition and growth. This tradition persisted into the Renaissance, where Paracelsus and later alchemists viewed the liver as the organ of sulfur, the fiery, active principle of life. In the Hermetic Qabalah, the liver’s placement on the 22nd Path links it to the Tarot trump Strength (Leo), symbolizing the controlled use of primal energy.
In Liber 777
In the table of correspondences, the liver appears as the specific assignment for the 22nd Path under the column "The Human Body." It stands as the physical anchor for the spiritual current that flows between severity and mercy, embodying the alchemical truth that purification requires fire.
