Blue

Blue is the color of the clear, infinite sky, a primary hue of light and water. In the context of the Hermetic Qabalah, the word itself derives from the Old French bleu, a term for the color of the heavens, from a Germanic root, replacing the Latin caeruleus. It is the color of distance, depth, and the still, receptive firmament.

Position on the Tree of Life

Blue in the King Scale of Colour corresponds to Path 25. This path is the twenty-fifth numbered path on the Tree of Life, connecting the fourth Sephirah, Chesed (Mercy, represented by Deep Violet), and the fifth Sephirah, Geburah (Severity, represented by Orange). Path 25 is attributed to the Hebrew letter Samekh (ס), meaning a prop or support, and to the Tarot trump XIV. Temperance (also called Art). The color Blue, as the bridge between the violet of formless mercy and the orange of active judgment, represents the transmutation and balance of these opposing forces into a stable, flowing energy.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the Qabalistic system of Liber 777, the color Blue on Path 25 does not have a direct planetary or zodiacal attribution. Instead, the letter Samekh is attributed to the zodiacal sign Sagittarius, but this astrological link is to the letter, not the color scale directly. The King Scale of Colour (Column XV) provides the Yetziratic (formative) color for the path itself—the essential hue used in meditation and ritual to tune into the path's specific vibration, separate from its astrological component.

Historical context

The use of Blue as a specific color in the King Scale emerges from the systematic color attributions developed by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the late 19th century. This system was largely codified by S.L. MacGregor Mathers and later expanded upon by Aleister Crowley in Liber 777. The Golden Dawn synthesized earlier Renaissance color symbolism (where Blue was linked to Jupiter, royalty, and contemplation) with the four Qabalistic worlds: Atziluth (Emanation, King Scale), Briah (Creation, Queen Scale), Yetzirah (Formation, Prince Scale), and Assiah (Action, Princess Scale).

Within this schema, the King Scale is the most pure, abstract, and active expression of the color. Blue on Path 25 is the direct
