The King Scale of Colour (y) · Malkuth

Yellow

Yellow, in its purest solar aspect, is the color of the Kingdom—Malkuth—on the King Scale of Colour. This is not the pale, sickly yellow of decay, but the brilliant, golden hue of ripe grain, the light of dawn striking the earth, and the sulfur of the alchemists, the fixed and volatile principle that is the foundation of the physical world. In Hebrew, the word for yellow, tzahov (צָהֹב), is related to zohar (זֹהַר), meaning 'splendor' or 'radiance,' linking the color directly to the divine light that manifests in the lowest Sephirah.

Position on the Tree of Life

Yellow occupies the tenth position on the Tree of Life, Malkuth, the final Sephirah. As the King Scale color for this sphere, it represents the most external, active, and 'royal' manifestation of the material world. It is the color of the completed work, the philosopher's stone in its base form, and the 'Malkah' (Queen) who is also the 'Kallah' (Bride) of the Microprosopus. This yellow is the light that has descended through all the Sephiroth and now shines from the earth itself, making the physical world a vessel for the divine.

Historical Context

The attribution of yellow to Malkuth in the King Scale is a specific and crucial innovation within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. While earlier color scales for the Tree of Life often assigned black, brown, or green to the Kingdom, the Golden Dawn's King Scale—derived from the 'Book of Concealed Mystery' and the Zohar—uses yellow to emphasize the sphere's hidden glory. This choice reflects the alchemical stage of citrinitas (yellowing), which follows albedo (whitening) and precedes rubedo (reddening). In this context, yellow is the dawning of the solar gold within the base matter, the 'soul of the earth' becoming visible. It is the color of the element Earth in its most refined, 'philosophical' aspect, as opposed to the dull, earthy tones of the Queen Scale. This yellow is also the color of the Tiphareth (the Sun) reflected in Malkuth, showing that the center of the microcosm is mirrored in the physical body and the material world.

In the 777 table, this yellow for Malkuth stands in stark contrast to the other colors assigned to the same Sephirah in different scales: the Queen Scale's citrine, russet, olive, and black, and the Emperor Scale's black rayed with yellow. It is the single, unified, and radiant color that reveals the true nature of the Kingdom as the culmination of the Great Work, the place where the divine will is made manifest in the dust of the earth.
