Violet

Violet is the shortest-wavelength color in the visible spectrum, historically associated with the highest spiritual attainment, royalty, and the transition between the physical and the divine. Its name derives from the Latin viola (violet flower), and in occult symbolism it often represents the blending of red (action) and blue (contemplation) into a transcendent unity.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, violet appears as the King Scale color for Path 21, which is the path of Kaph (Jupiter). This path connects Chesed (Mercy, sphere of Jupiter) to Binah (Understanding, sphere of Saturn). As the King Scale color, violet here signifies the active, masculine, and expansive expression of the divine will—a color that mediates between the structured severity of Binah and the flowing mercy of Chesed. In the same scale, violet also appears at Path 28 (the path of Tzaddi, Aquarius) and as a component of Hod (Violet purple, sphere of Mercury), but at Path 21 it is the pure, untinged violet of Jupiter’s regal authority.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Path 21 is governed by Jupiter, the planet of expansion, wisdom, and beneficence. In the King Scale, violet is the color that embodies Jupiter’s highest nature: the synthesis of law (blue) and life (red) into a sovereign harmony. This is not the deep violet of Chesed (which is a darker, more introspective shade) but a luminous violet that reflects the planet’s role as the “Great Benefic” in traditional astrology. The color thus carries the energy of royal judgment tempered by mercy, of spiritual authority that is both majestic and accessible.

Historical context

The use of violet in Western esotericism is deeply rooted in the Qabalistic color scales systematized by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The King Scale (also called the Scale of the King) is the most exalted of the four color scales, corresponding to the divine world of Atziluth. Violet in this scale is not a mere pigment but a metaphysical signature: it is the color of the highest sephirah Keter in some systems (though in Liber 777 Keter is “Brilliance”), and it appears on the paths that bridge the supernal triad.

In alchemical tradition, violet was the color of the cauda pavonis (peacock’s tail), the stage of the Great Work where all colors flash before the appearance of the White Stone. Theosophists later adopted violet as the color of the seventh ray (the Ray of Ceremonial Order), linking it to spiritual transformation and the crown chakra. In the Golden Dawn’s rituals, violet robes were worn by the Hierophant in certain grades, and the color was used in the consecration of talismans for Jupiter.

Crowley’s Liber 777 assigns violet to Path 21, and in his commentary he notes that this color “is the synthesis of the red and blue, the active and passive, the fire and water; it is the color of the Royal Art.” The association with Jupiter is further reinforced by the planet’s traditional color in classical astrology—though Jupiter was often depicted in blue or white, the Qabalistic King Scale elevates it to violet to indicate its highest spiritual function.

In the table

In Liber 777, at the intersection of row XV.* (The King Scale of Colour) and step 21 (Path 21), the cell value is simply “Violet.” This single word encodes the entire complex of correspondences: the path of Kaph, the planet Jupiter, the number 21, and the divine attribute of merciful authority. It is a color that stands at the threshold of the supernal world, a gateway between the formless and the formed.
