Anael

Position on the Tree of Life

Anael is assigned to Path 14 on the Tree of Life, which connects Chokmah (Wisdom) to Binah (Understanding). This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Daleth (ד) and the planet Venus. As the intelligence of this path, Anael mediates the flow of creative, receptive wisdom from the supernal triad into the structured forms of understanding. The geomantic figure corresponding to this step is traditionally Populus, a passive and collective symbol, which aligns with Anael’s role as a unifying, attractive force.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Anael is the ruling angel of Venus in numerous grimoires, including the Key of Solomon and the works of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa. Venusian attributes—love, fertility, art, pleasure, and social harmony—are central to Anael’s character. In astrological magic, Anael is invoked to foster affection, reconcile disputes, and enhance creative endeavors. The planetary hour of Venus and its associated colors (green, rose) and incense (rose, sandalwood) are used in rituals directed to this intelligence.

Historical context

Anael appears in several major Western esoteric traditions. In the Zohar, Anael is named among the angels who preside over the sphere of Venus (Nogah). The Key of Solomon lists Anael as one of the seven archangels governing the planetary hours, specifically the third hour of the day. Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy describes Anael as the intelligence of Venus, capable of granting grace, beauty, and the love of others. In the geomantic tradition, Anael is the intelligence of the figure Populus, which represents crowds, gatherings, and the collective—a fitting symbol for an angel of social harmony. Later ceremonial magicians, such as those in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, retained Anael’s Venusian attribution, often placing it on the 14th path of the Tree of Life.

In Liber 777, Anael appears at scale step 14 under the column ‘Geomantic Intelligences.’ This placement reinforces its function as the active, guiding intelligence behind the geomantic figure for that path, channeling Venusian influence into the divinatory and magical work of the practitioner.
