Pathjoins 2–3
Pathjoins 2–3 is the designation for the fourteenth path on the Tree of Life, the direct connection between Chokmah (Wisdom) and Binah (Understanding). The name itself is a functional label—it indicates that this path joins sephirah 2 and sephirah 3, forming a bridge across the Abyss at the supernal level. In the standard 32‑path system, this is Path 14, the second path on the second plane.
Position on the Tree of Life
Pathjoins 2–3 occupies the second plane (the level of the supernal triad) and runs horizontally between the right pillar (Chokmah) and the left pillar (Binah). Unlike the vertical paths that ascend or descend the Middle Pillar, this horizontal connection stabilizes the two highest emanations, allowing the dynamic force of Chokmah to be received and shaped by the receptive form of Binah. In the diagram of the Tree, it is the uppermost horizontal path, lying directly above the path that joins Keter to Tiphereth (Path 13).
Astrological and planetary correspondence
In the Hermetic Qabalah, Path 14 is assigned the Hebrew letter Daleth (ד), meaning “door,” and the planet Venus. This correspondence emphasizes the path’s role as a gateway through which the undifferentiated energy of Chokmah passes into the structured womb of Binah. Venusian qualities—harmony, attraction, and creative generation—are essential to this transition, tempering the raw force of wisdom with the beauty of form. The path is also linked to the zodiac sign Taurus (the Bull), further grounding its Venusian nature in stability and material manifestation.
Historical context
The concept of a path joining Chokmah and Binah appears in early Kabbalistic texts such as the Sefer Yetzirah, which lists the 32 paths of wisdom. The Sefer Yetzirah describes the second path (in its own enumeration) as “the path of the illuminating intelligence,” but later medieval and Renaissance Kabbalists, including Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria, mapped the paths onto the sephirothic diagram. The specific assignment of Daleth to this path is found in the Zohar and was systematized in the 16th‑century Pardes Rimonim by Cordovero. In the Hermetic revival of the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in the work of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Path 14 was codified as the Venus‑ruled connection between the second and third sephiroth. The 777 table of correspondences, compiled by Aleister Crowley, follows this tradition, listing “Pathjoins 2–3” as the entry for the Tree of Life column at scale step 14.
In the 777 table, the cell for the Tree of Life column at step 14 simply reads “Pathjoins 2–3,” a concise label that identifies the path by its endpoints rather than by its traditional name or symbol. This reflects the table’s function as a cross‑referencing tool: the user is expected to consult the corresponding columns (e.g., Hebrew letter, planet, zodiac) for the full set of correspondences. The path itself, however, remains a vital conduit in the supernal triad, embodying the Venusian principle that mediates between wisdom and understanding.
