וההי
«וההי» — Vav-He-He-Yod
Translation: Vav‑He‑He‑Yod, the second of the twelve permutations of the Tetragrammaton formed by rotating the four letters Yod‑He‑Vav‑He. In this sequence Vav leads, followed by two Hes and closing with Yod. Etymologically the root is the same as all Tetragrammaton forms: the ineffable Name, here re‑ordered to express a distinct emanation of divine power.
Position on the Tree of Life
«וההי» corresponds to the second Sephirah, Chokmah (Wisdom), the active, expansive principle of pure intelligent force. As the initial impulse of the divine will, Chokmah is the first point of differentiation from Kether; this permutation embodies the creative surge directed outward, the “engendering” aspect of the Name. In the scheme of the twelve permutations (sometimes called the “Revolutions of HWHY”), each variant governs one Sephirah from Kether to Malkuth, with «וההי» occupying the Chokmah step.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Chokmah is associated with the sphere of the Zodiac (the fixed stars) and with the planet Uranus in modern systems, or with the Primum Mobile in older Qabalistic astronomy. «וההי» thus resonates with sudden insight, inventive power, and the raw ordering of chaos into pattern—qualities attributed to the second Sephirah. No direct planet‑to‑letter mapping is fixed, but the permutation’s Vav‑leading cadence suggests a vertical, penetrating energy (Vav as a “nail” or hook) that links above and below.
Historical context
The twelve permutations of the Tetragrammaton appear in the Sefer Yetzirah as part of the “231 gates” formed by the two‑letter combinations of the Hebrew alphabet. By the medieval period, Qabalists such as Rabbi Abraham Abulafia developed methods of meditative permutation (Tzeruf) using these sequences to achieve prophetic states. The version «וההי» specifically appears in the Shem ha‑Mephorash (the “explicit Name”) traditions, where the 72‑part Name is derived from Exodus 14:19‑21; each of the 72 angels is linked to a three‑letter name, but the twelve Tetragrammaton forms are considered higher signatures of the divine attributes.
In the Hermetic Qabalah of the Golden Dawn and later Liber 777, the twelve permutations are arranged on the Tree of Life as a sequence of “Flashing Lights”—intensified visualizations of the Name in each Sephirah. «וההי» at step 2 (Chokmah) is the second light, associated with the outer form of the Father‑principle.
Appearance in Liber 777
In the table for row XCVI, column 2 (the scale of Chokmah), «וההי» is entered as the second permutation of the Tetragrammaton. It is the active, projective counterpart to the Kether form (הוהי) and to the Binah form (ההוי), aligning with the dynamic, masculine pole of the Tree.
