ההוי
ההוי (Heh-Heh-Vav-Yod) is one of the twelve permutations of the Tetragrammaton (YHVH) that arise in the kabbalistic world of Yetzirah (Formation). The sequence reads heh, heh, vav, yod — a reordering of the four letters that shifts the first yod to the final position. In the tradition of the Revolutions of HWHY, each permutation corresponds to a specific sephirah on the Tree of Life, and «ההוי» is the form assigned to Binah, the third sephirah (Understanding). Etymologically, the permutation is not a word but a sacred cipher; its letters are the same as the ineffable Name, rearranged to channel a particular divine aspect.
Position on the Tree of Life
«ההוי» occupies the sephirah Binah, the third emanation on the Tree of Life. Binah is the receptive, structuring principle that receives the raw force of Chokmah (Wisdom) and gives it form. As the “Supernal Mother,” Binah is associated with the letter heh in the Tetragrammaton — and notably, the permutation «ההוי» begins with two hehs, emphasizing Binah’s dual role as both the source of form and the womb of creation. In the Yetziratic scheme, this permutation is the “revolving” of the Name that activates the understanding and containment of divine energy.
Historical context
The practice of permuting the Tetragrammaton is rooted in the Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation), the earliest extant Hebrew text of systematic Jewish mysticism (c. 2nd–6th centuries CE). The Sefer Yetzirah describes how the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet, especially the four letters of the Divine Name, are combined and permuted to generate the cosmos. By the medieval period, Kabbalists such as Abraham Abulafia (13th century) developed elaborate meditative techniques using letter permutations (tzeruf), where each reordering of YHVH was believed to unlock a different divine attribute or sephirotic channel. The specific set of twelve permutations — one for each of the ten sephiroth plus two for the non-sephirotic zeros — appears in later Kabbalistic compendia, notably in the Pardes Rimonim of Moses Cordovero (16th century) and in the Hermetic-Kabbalistic synthesis of the Golden Dawn. In these traditions, «ההוי» is the permutation that “revolves” the Name into the sphere of Binah, aligning the practitioner with the power of understanding, silence, and the formless depths that precede manifestation.
In the table of Liber 777, «ההוי» appears at scale step 3 (Binah) under the row “The Revolutions of HWHY in Yetzirah.” It is the third of the twelve permutations, following the forms for Keter (הוהי) and Chokmah (וההי), and preceding those for Chesed through Malkuth. Its placement here links the permutation directly to the sephirah of Understanding, making it a key glyph for meditative work on the structuring of divine wisdom.
