והיה

והיה (Vav-Heh-Yod-Heh): The Permutation of Netzach

והיה (VHVH, vocalized as V’hayah) is one of the twelve permutations of the Tetragrammaton יהוה. The word itself means “and it shall be” or “and it came to pass”—a future-looking declaration of becoming. In the system of the Seventy Names of the Merkabah (the Shemot ha-Merkabah), each distinct letter-order of the Divine Name is considered a living formula, a key to a specific spiritual gate. Unlike the standard Tetragrammaton, which is static, a permutation is dynamic: it represents God’s unfolding attribute as it moves from potential into action.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, והיה corresponds to the seventh sephirah, Netzach (Victory or Endurance). Netzach is the sphere of emotion, desire, and the raw drive toward connection—often analogized to the force that compels the lover to quest for union. This permutation activates that specific energetic current. In the progression of the twelve permutations, which unfold through the twelve simple letters and the seven double letters, the sequence reaches this form at the step of Netzach. Here, the Name is polarized into a vigorous, expansive outflow. The word-form itself—a verb of futurity—mirrors Netzach’s nature as the forward-thrust of aspiration, the conviction that victory is yet to be realized.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Netzach is governed by Venus (nogah, נגה), the sphere of love, beauty, and natural attraction. The permutation והיה therefore channels the Venusian aspect of the Divine Name—the energy that binds all things through affinity rather than law. In astrological terms, this permutation is the “Venus speech” of the Tetragrammaton: it harmonizes, charms, and creates through delight. No aggressive or combative qualities belong to it; its force is magnetic, not coercive. This connection is reinforced in Western esoteric correspondences, where the Netzach-Yetzirah world is the realm of the Kerubim and the harmonious interweaving of celestial and planetary voices.

Historical Context

The practice of permuting the letters of the Tetragrammaton reaches its fullest expression in the early Jewish mystical text Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation). There, the twenty-two letters are the “stones” of creation, and by rearranging them—especially the Four-Letter Name—the adept can replicate the act of divine speech that brought the cosmos into being. Later, the Kabbalists of the Merkabah (the Heikhalot tradition) and the Hasidei Ashkenaz (German Pietists) developed formal lists of these permutations, often associating each with a heavenly hall, an angel, or a divine attribute.

והיה appears in the sequence of the “Twelve Revolutions of the Tetragrammaton,” where each permutation is linked to one of the twelve simple letters of the Hebrew alphabet and, by extension, to one of the twelve signs of the zodiac or months of the year. In this system, the permutation for Tishrei (the seventh month, also under Netzach’s influence in certain schemes) is והיה. Tishrei is the month of Sukkot, the festival of joy and divine embrace—again echoing the Venus-Netzach quality of this Name.

In practical Kabbalah, meditating on והיה is performed to draw the influence of Netzach into one’s consciousness. The Zohar describes the “revolutions of the Name” as a method of tikkun (repair): each permutation corrects a specific imbalance in the soul. The והיה permutation is used to restore the capacity for joy, to mend emotional disturbances, and to align the lower heart with the higher love of the Divine. The Gematria of והיה is 26—identical to that of the standard Tetragrammaton (יהוה = 26). This is significant: despite the changed order, the numerical essence remains the same. No permutation diminishes the Name’s holiness; each merely reorients its light.

In Liber 777

In Crowley's Liber 777, והיה appears in table row XCVI*. under “The Revolutions of HWHY in Yetzirah,” specifically at scale step 7 (Netzach). It is listed there alongside the angelic formula suitable for Netzach’s sphere. The other permutations in the same row progress from Keter (הוהי) through Malkuth (ההיו), forming a complete circuit of the Name through all ten sephiroth. At the Netzach station, והיה stands as the victorious Name—the formula that, when vibrated in the world of Yetzirah (formation), manifests the energy of enduring love.
