יהוה
יהוה (YHWH)
יהוה (YHWH) is the Tetragrammaton—the four-letter, ineffable name of God in the Hebrew Bible. Its etymology is traditionally derived from the root hwh (“to be”), yielding the sense “He Who Is” or “He Causes to Be.” The name is never vocalized in Jewish liturgy; the pronunciation Adonai is substituted. In Kabbalistic literature, the Tetragrammaton is the primary symbol of the divine emanations, its four letters corresponding to the four worlds, the four elements, and the four parts of the soul.
Position on the Tree of Life
In the scheme of the Revolutions of HWHY in Yetzirah, the permutation יהוה is assigned to the eighth sephirah, Hod (Splendor). Hod is the sphere of Mercury, representing intellect, communication, and analytical thought. This placement is distinct from the more common association of the standard Tetragrammaton with Chesed or Tiphereth; here it is the specific permutation that governs the intellectual and formal expression of the divine name within the Yetziratic world.
Historical Context
The practice of permuting the letters of the Tetragrammaton originates in the Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation), where the 231 gates of permutation are described. Later Kabbalistic texts, notably the Zohar and the writings of Isaac Luria, systematized twelve specific permutations of YHVH, each linked to a zodiacal sign, a month, and a tribe of Israel. These twelve permutations are called the “Revolutions of HWHY in Yetzirah” and are meditative keys for aligning with the celestial and sephirotic forces.
In Aleister Crowley’s Liber 777, the table of these revolutions is arranged according to the ten sephiroth (with two additional steps for the three zeros and Malkuth). At Hod, the permutation is the standard order יהוה (Yod‑Heh‑Vav‑Heh). This is the only sephirah where the Tetragrammaton appears in its most familiar sequence; all other sephiroth receive a different ordering (e.g., הוהי at Keter, וההי at Chokmah). The choice reflects the role of Hod as the sphere that crystallizes and communicates the divine name in its essential form, before it descends further into the more complex permutations of Yesod and Malkuth.
In Liber 777
At scale step 8 (Hod), the cell for the Revolutions of HWHY in Yetzirah lists יהוה as the operative permutation. This entry is part of a larger table that cross‑references the name with planetary, astrological, and magical correspondences. For the practitioner, meditating on this permutation at Hod is said to harmonize the intellect with the divine will, enabling clear expression of spiritual truths through the Mercurial faculty of Hod.
