153

One hundred fifty-three is the triangular number of 17, the sum of all integers from 1 to 17. In the Qabalistic numerology of the Tree of Life, each Sephirah and Path is assigned a mystic number—a triangular number that represents the complete unfolding of its position. For the 17th Path, that number is 153.

Position on the Tree of Life

153 is the mystic number of the 17th Path, which connects Hod (Splendor, Sephirah 8) to Netzach (Victory, Sephirah 7). This Path is the 17th step in the sequence of the 32 Paths of Wisdom, and its triangular number, 153, encodes the sum of all the steps from the beginning of the sequence up to this point.

Historical context

The number 153 carries a dense history of esoteric interpretation, most famously from the Gospel of John (21:11), where the resurrected Jesus instructs his disciples to cast their net on the right side of the boat, and they catch 153 large fish. The net does not break. This passage has been a nexus for Gematria, numerology, and symbolic exegesis for two millennia.

Early Church Fathers like Augustine of Hippo saw 153 as a number of cosmic completion. He noted that 153 is the sum of the numbers 1 through 17, and that 17 itself is the sum of 10 (the Decalogue) and 7 (the gifts of the Holy Spirit). Thus, the 153 fish represented all the elect who would be saved through the Law and Grace.

In Jewish Gematria, 153 is the value of the phrase "Ani Elohim" (I am God) when using a specific cipher, and also equals "Beni ha-Elohim" (Sons of God). The number also appears in the Hebrew phrase "Gehinnom" (Valley of Hinnom, often associated with judgment or purification), which has a value of 153. This duality—salvation and judgment—is inherent in the number's symbolism.

In the Qabalah, the number 153 is directly linked to the 17th Path, which is associated with the Hebrew letter Zayin (ז), meaning "sword" or "weapon." Zayin is the seventh letter, and 17 is the sum of 7 (Zayin) and 10 (the Sephiroth). The 153 fish can thus be seen as the 153 aspects or sparks of the 17th Path's energy, caught in the net of the Tree of Life.

The number also appears in the works of the 16th-century mystic John Dee, who used 153 in his Enochian system as a key to the 91 calls (91 being the mystic number of Path 13, the 13th Path). Dee's angelic communications often referenced 153 as a number of the "gathering" or "harvest."

In the table of Liber 777, 153 appears in the column of Mystic Numbers of the Sephiroth at the row for Path 17. It is the specific numeric signature of that Path, a number that, when reduced (1+5+3=9), echoes the sphere of Yesod (9), the foundation, suggesting a grounding of the Path's energy into a stable, manifest form.
