45

45 is the triangular number of 9, calculated as the sum of all integers from 1 to 9 (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 = 45). This number signifies the complete and perfect foundation, as it is the sum of all the numbers that precede it in the sequence of the Sephiroth, culminating in the ninth sphere, Yesod. It represents the total potential of the nine lower Sephiroth, gathered and focused into a single, stable point of manifestation.

Position on the Tree of Life

45 is the Mystic Number assigned to Yesod, the ninth Sephirah. Yesod is the Foundation, the lunar sphere that receives, balances, and transmits the energies of the higher Sephiroth to Malkuth. The number 45, as the sum of 1 through 9, perfectly encapsulates this role: it is the sum of all the preceding sephirothic numbers, representing the complete synthesis of their forces before their final descent into the physical world (Malkuth, whose Mystic Number is 55).

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Yesod is attributed to the sphere of the Moon. The number 45, therefore, carries lunar symbolism: cycles, reflection, growth, and the subconscious. In gematria, 45 is the value of the Hebrew word Adam (אדם), representing the archetypal human, formed from the dust of the earth (Malkuth) and animated by the divine breath. It is also the value of Mah (מה), one of the divine names associated with the world of Yetzirah (Formation), the plane of Yesod.

Historical context

The concept of Mystic Numbers for the Sephiroth is derived from the Kabbalistic tradition of gematria, where each Sephirah is assigned a number that is the sum of the integers from 1 to its own number. This sequence (1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45, 55) is known as the triangular numbers. The number 45 appears in this context in the foundational Kabbalistic text, the Sefer Yetzirah, which describes the creation of the universe through the 32 paths of wisdom (the 10 Sephiroth and 22 letters). The number 45 is also significant in the Kabbalistic system of Temurah, where it is the value of the divine name YHVH when spelled out in the Mah (45) expansion: Yod (20), He (5), Vav (6), He (5) = 36, but when the letters themselves are spelled in full (Yod-Vav-Dalet, He-Aleph, Vav-Aleph-Vav, He-Aleph), the total is 45. This connects the number directly to the Tetragrammaton and the process of creation.

In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, from which Liber 777 draws, these numerical correspondences were systematized and expanded. The number 45, as the Mystic Number of Yesod, was used in ritual and meditation to align the practitioner with the foundational and lunar energies of the Sephirah.

In the table of Liber 777, the number 45 appears in the column "Mystic Numbers of the Sephiroth" at the row for Yesod (scale step 9). It is the specific numerical value that defines the Sephirah's position in the sequence of triangular numbers, representing the sum of its own number and all that came before it.
