28

28 is the mystic number of Netzach, the seventh sephirah on the Tree of Life. In the Kabbalistic tradition of the Sepher Yetzirah and later Qabalistic numerology, each sephirah is assigned a triangular number formed by summing all integers from 1 up to the sephirah’s own rank. For Netzach, the seventh sphere, that sum is 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 28. The number thus embodies the completion of the seven lower sephiroth and the ascent of consciousness through the seven classical planets.

Position on the Tree of Life

Netzach, the seventh sephirah, occupies the right pillar (the Pillar of Mercy) and represents victory, endurance, and the driving force of nature. Its mystic number 28 is the triangular number of 7, indicating that Netzach is the natural culmination of the first seven emanations. In the diagram of the Tree, Netzach sits below Chesed and above Hod, balancing the active and passive forces of the lower worlds.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Netzach is traditionally assigned to Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and harmony. The number 28 reinforces this association through its connection to the lunar cycle—the moon completes its orbit around Earth in approximately 28 days, governing tides, emotions, and the rhythms of growth. Venus and the moon share a long‑standing symbolic link in many traditions (e.g., the planet Venus as the evening star, the moon as the ruler of the night), and 28 thus ties Netzach’s Venusian aesthetic to the cyclical, receptive nature of lunar time.

Historical context

The number 28 has been revered since antiquity. In Pythagorean mathematics, it is the second perfect number (after 6), because its proper divisors (1, 2, 4, 7, 14) sum to itself. The Pythagoreans saw perfect numbers as symbols of virtue and cosmic harmony. In Jewish mysticism, the number 28 appears in the Sefer Yetzirah as the number of “letters” in the Hebrew alphabet when counting the five final forms separately (22 + 5 = 27, but some traditions include a 28th letter, the shin with a dot, or treat the alphabet as having 28 gates of wisdom). More directly, the Kabbalistic work The Bahir and later Zoharic texts discuss the 28 days of the lunar month as a measure of the feminine divine presence (Shekhinah), which corresponds to the lower sephiroth and especially to Netzach. In the Renaissance Hermetic tradition, 28 was also the number of the “Mansions of the Moon” used in astrological magic, further cementing its link to Venusian and lunar forces.

In Liber 777, the mystic number 28 appears in the column “Mystic Numbers of the Sephiroth” at the row for Netzach (step 7). It stands as a concise numerical signature for the sephirah’s essence: the perfect harmony of the first seven emanations, the lunar cycle of renewal, and the Venusian impulse toward beauty and endurance.
