Fifty-five is the triangular number of ten, the sum of the integers from one to ten (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10 = 55). In the Qabalistic system of Liber 777, this number is the Mystic Number of Malkuth, the tenth and final Sephirah. The term "Mystic Number" refers to the sum of the numbers of all the paths and Sephiroth that lead to and constitute a given sphere, and for Malkuth, this sum is 55, representing the complete synthesis of the ten Sephiroth in the material world.

Position on the Tree of Life

Fifty-five corresponds to the tenth Sephirah, Malkuth (the Kingdom), which is the final sphere on the Tree of Life. It is the point of manifestation, the physical universe, and the receptacle for all the forces from the higher Sephiroth. As the Mystic Number of Malkuth, 55 encapsulates the entire process of emanation from Kether (1) through the nine other Sephiroth, culminating in the material plane.

Historical context

The concept of Mystic Numbers in Qabalah derives from the Pythagorean and Neoplatonic tradition of gematria and number symbolism. In the Sefer Yetzirah, the ten Sephiroth are associated with the ten primordial numbers. The triangular number of ten (55) was recognized by early Jewish mystics as a symbol of completion and the totality of creation. In the 16th-century Lurianic Qabalah, the number 55 is linked to the name of God associated with Malkuth, Adonai (whose gematria is 65), and to the concept of the Shekhinah, the divine presence dwelling in the material world. The 19th-century Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn systematized these correspondences, assigning 55 as the Mystic Number of Malkuth in their tables, which were later published in Aleister Crowley's Liber 777.

In Liber 777, the number 55 appears in the column "Mystic Numbers of the Sephiroth" at the row for Malkuth. It is the final entry in a sequence that begins with 0 (the three zeros of the Ain Soph Aur) and progresses through the triangular numbers of each Sephirah: 1 (Kether), 3 (Chokmah), 6 (Binah), 10 (Chesed), 15 (Geburah), 21 (Tiphereth), 28 (Netzach), 36 (Hod), 45 (Yesod), and finally 55 (Malkuth). This sequence demonstrates the incremental accumulation of number as one descends the Tree, with 55 representing the full sum of the ten spheres.
