Numeration of Greek Alphabet · Path 11

1

The number 1 in the numeration of the Greek alphabet is the value of Alpha (Α, α), the first letter. Its name derives from the Phoenician aleph, meaning 'ox,' a symbol of strength and primacy. In Greek isopsephy, Alpha’s value of 1 establishes it as the monad, the indivisible source from which all other numbers and letters proceed. This aligns with the Pythagorean concept of the monad as the generator of all number, and with the Neoplatonic notion of the One as the ineffable first principle.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, the number 1 corresponds to the Sephirah Kether (the Crown), the first and highest emanation. Kether is the point of origin, the primal will, and the undifferentiated unity before division. The Path of Aleph (Path 11) connects Kether to Chokmah, but the number 1 itself is the direct numerical signature of Kether’s essence: the number of absolute beginning.

Historical context

The Greek alphabet was adapted from the Phoenician script around the 8th century BCE, and its letters were used as numerals by the 5th century BCE. Alpha, as the first letter, naturally took the value 1. In Hellenistic magical and philosophical traditions, Alpha was associated with the god Aion (eternity) and the concept of archē (first principle). The Chaldean Oracles and later Hermetic texts treat the monad as the root of creation. In the Sepher Yetzirah, the Hebrew letter Aleph (also value 1) is the breath of God, and this parallel was absorbed into Western esotericism via the Kabbalistic correspondences of 777. The number 1 thus carries the weight of both Greek and Hebrew mystical traditions as the cipher of the unmanifest source.

In the table of 777 at step 11 (Path 11), the number 1 appears as the numeration of the Greek alphabet for the letter Alpha, reinforcing the path’s connection to the primal airy intelligence and the first stirring of consciousness from the void.
