90
The number 90 enters Greek numeration through Qoppa (Ϙ, ϙ), an archaic letter that the Greeks inherited from the Phoenician alphabet. In the Milesian numeral system, which assigned numerical values to letters of the Ionic alphabet, Qoppa occupied the slot 90 because the older West Greek alphabets still used it for the /k/ sound before back vowels (Ο, Υ). Once the standard 24‑letter Ionic alphabet displaced Qoppa as a letter, its shape was repurposed as the numeral symbol Ϙ for 90—a ghost character that lived on solely as a count.
Position on the Tree of Life
In the 777 schema, the column “Numeration of Greek Alphabet” proceeds through the 32 paths with increasing letter values. The step 29 (Path 29, which corresponds to the path from Netzach to Hod) is assigned the value 90. This places it between Path 28 (700) and Path 30 (100), a jump that reflects the irregular sequence of Greek numerals: after the “letter” stigma (Ϛ, 6), the system loops through tens (10, 20, 30…), and 90 is the last of the “round” numbers before the hundreds start with 100 (Rho).
Historical context
The Greek numeral system is first attested on Attic vases and in inscriptions from the 5th century BCE. Qoppa as a numeral sign appears in papyri and on coins well into the Roman period, even though the letter had ceased to be written in ordinary Greek script by the 6th century BCE. By the time of the Codex Alexandrinus (5th century CE), Ϙ was used exclusively in marginal numberings. In isopsephy—the Greek practice of adding letter values to discover hidden numerical correspondences—90 appears in words such as ΜΗΤΗΡ (mētēr, 40+8+300+8+100=456, but the value 90 itself is a building block) and in the name ΘΕΟΔΩΡΟΣ (Theodōros, 9+5+70+4+800+100+70+200=1258, of which 90 is a component only as part of larger sums). The number 90 also resonates with the Jewish gematria of the letter Tzaddi (צ, also 90), linking the Greek and Hebrew traditions in the 777 tables.
The 90 of the Greek alphabet is thus a fossil: a number that preserved a letter that the Greeks themselves discarded. It occupies the 29th position on the Tree of Life paths, serving as the numeric anchor for the journey between Netzach and Hod—a trail where the old form (Qoppa) still dictates the value, even after the sound has vanished.
