7

Seven (ἑπτά, hepta) is the number of the full cycle, the Sabbath, and the perfected form of the spiritual in the material. Its Greek name, hepta, derives from the Semitic root šbʿ (to be full, to swear an oath), and its glyph is the intersection of the triangle of spirit with the square of matter—the four-square foundation crowned by the triad of heaven. In the Greek isopsephic system, 7 is the value of the letter Zeta (Ζ, ζ), which itself represents the life-force and the zodiacal circle.

Position on the Tree of Life

Seven corresponds to the Sephirah Netzach (Victory) on the Tree of Life, the sphere of Venus and the emotional, aesthetic, and instinctual drives. It is also the number of Path 17 (the 17th path of the Tree), which connects Netzach to Tiphereth and is attributed to the Tarot Trump The Star (the letter Tzaddi). The value 7 here marks the completion of the lower seven Sephiroth (from Chesed to Malkuth) and the beginning of the ascent toward the supernal triad.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

In the Hellenistic and medieval traditions, 7 governs the seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) and the seven days of the week. It is the number of the Pleiades (the Seven Sisters) and of the seven metals of alchemy. In the 777 system, the number 7 itself is not a planet but the numeration of the Greek alphabet at the step of Path 17, which is astrologically linked to the fixed star Aquarius (the Water-Bearer) and the element of Air in its most refined, spiritual aspect.

Historical context

The sacredness of seven is universal and ancient. In the Sefer Yetzirah, the seven double letters (Beth, Gimel, Daleth, Kaph, Pe, Resh, Tau) correspond to the seven planets, the seven days, and the seven gates of the soul. The Pythagoreans called seven the “Vehicle of Life” because it contains both the triad (heaven) and the tetrad (earth), and they noted that 7 is the only number below 10 that is neither generated by nor generates any other number in the decad (it is a prime, and its multiples do not produce a digit within the decad). In the Hebrew Kabbalah, the seventh Sephirah is Netzach, and the seventh day is Shabbat—the day of rest and completion. The Greek magical papyri frequently invoke the seven vowels (A, E, Ē, I, O, Y, Ō) as the sounds of creation, each assigned to a planetary sphere. The number 7 also appears in the Liber 777 table as the value of the Greek letter Zeta, which in the Orphic hymns is the letter of Zeus and of the life-force (zōē).

In the 777 table at this step (Numeration of Greek Alphabet, Path 17), the number 7 stands as the isopsephic value of Zeta, the seventh letter, completing the first heptad of the Greek alphabet and serving as the numerical key to the Star card and the path of spiritual refreshment.
