30

30 is the Greek letter Lambda (uppercase Λ, lowercase λ), the eleventh letter of the alphabet. In the Greek numeral system, it carries the value 30. Its name derives from the Phoenician letter Lamed, meaning 'goad' or 'ox-goad,' a tool used to guide oxen, symbolizing direction, discipline, and the channelling of raw energy into a purposeful course.

Position on the Tree of Life

Lambda (30) corresponds to Path 30 of the Tree of Life, which connects the sixth Sephirah Tiphareth (Beauty, the solar centre) to the seventh Sephirah Netzach (Victory, the sphere of Venus). This path is one of the three solar paths on the Tree, and its number (30) reflects the thirty days of the solar month in the ancient lunar-solar calendar. In the Tarot, this path is attributed to the Trump The Sun (Atu XIX), a card of radiance, vitality, and conscious achievement.

Historical context

The value 30 is prominent in Greek isopsephy (the antecedent of Jewish gematria). It is the number of the Greek word Hêlios (Ἥλιος), the Sun, when counted by a later system (Ἥλιος = 8 + 30 + 10 + 70 + 200 = 318, but the root EL = 30 + 8 = 38, and the Sun’s day is the 30th day of the month). More directly, the letter Lambda was considered sacred by the Pythagoreans because the shape of its capital form (Λ) resembles a model of the number 30 as a triangular number: 30 is the sum of 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9, and the letter’s geometry was sometimes used to illustrate the Tetractys, the fundamental Pythagorean symbol of the four elements and the decad. In the Hebrew alphabet, the corresponding letter is Lamed (ל), also valued 30, and in Sepher Yetzirah it is one of the twelve simple letters governing the month of Tishrei and the sense of coition. The Greek usage, however, emphasized solar and martial clarity: the number 30 appears in the Iliad as the number of ships (Book II), and in later Neoplatonic commentary it was associated with the “thirty-third” (the Sun’s highest ascension) through number reduction (30 → 3, the triad).

Appearance in Liber 777

In Liber 777, Row CLXXXV (Numeration of Greek Alphabet) at Path 30 is assigned the value 100 in the column for the Greek numerals, deriving from the later Byzantine system where Lambda also stands for 30, but the table uses the 100 value to harmonize with the corresponding Hebrew letter (Qoph = 100), which rules the Path of the Moon. The table thus reflects a cross-indexed gematria: the primary correspondence for the path (Path 30) is the Greek letter Lambda with its original value 30, while its table entry at this step gives 100 as a secondary numerical alignment. Lambda (30) remains the direct icon for this path, bridging the Greek alphabet's solar numeric to the Tree of Life's channel of radiant will.
