6
Six is the integer between five and seven. In Greek isopsephy, its numeral is written as stigma (ϛ, Ϛ), a ligature of sigma and tau that occupied the sixth position in the classical Greek alphabet after epsilon and before zeta. As a numeral, stigma bears the value of the number six, distinguishing it from the earlier digamma (Ϝ, ϝ) used for the same value in archaic alphabets. The use of stigma persists in modern Greek orthography as a symbol for the numeral six in series and dates.
Position on the Tree of Life
The number six corresponds to the Sephirah Tiphereth, Beauty, which sits at the center of the glyph and is assigned 800—but the isolated numeral six itself pertains here directly to the scalar value of the Greek alphabet's sixth letter, not to Tiphereth's integer. On the path of Vau (number 16), six governs the conjunction between Chesed and Tiphereth.
Historical context
In Hermetic Qabalah, the number six is the value of the Hebrew letter Vav, meaning 'nail' or 'hook,' and symbolically denotes the sixth day of creation, on which Adam was formed. In Pythagorean number theory, six is the marriage of the first feminine number (two) and the first masculine number (three), a perfect number because its sum of proper divisors (1+2+3) equals itself. This perfection made it a model of cosmic harmony: the six-pointed hexagram, or Seal of Solomon, composed of two interlocking triangles, represents the union of fire and water, of macrocosm and microcosm. In late classical and medieval grimoires, the hexagram is a potent protective seal, often inscribed as a symbol of the sun and of the kingdom of beauty. The sixth letter of the Greek alphabet, whether digamma or stigma, was the numerical symbol for this number across Hellenistic and Byzantine contexts.
In Liber 777
In the table at row CLXXXV, the Greek alphabet's sixth position holds the value 6, represented by stigma, making it the numeral that underpins both the path of Vau and the Sephirah Tiphereth in the larger correspondences system.
