The Emperor Scale of Colour (v) · Geburah
Bright scarlet
Bright scarlet is a color of pure, incandescent force. It is not the scarlet of passion or desire, but the scarlet of the naked sword, the flash of lightning that shatters the old to make way for the new. In the language of the Qabalah, it is the color of Geburah, the fifth Sephirah, on the Emperor Scale of Colour—a scale that corresponds to the formative world of Yetzirah and to the active, structuring power of the King.
Position on the Tree of Life
Bright scarlet is the color of Geburah (Severity, Strength, Judgment) on the Emperor Scale. This scale is the fourth of the four Qabalistic color scales, each of which represents a different world or level of manifestation. The Emperor Scale is associated with Yetzirah, the world of formation and of the angels. Here, Geburah's severity is not a static quality but an active, shaping force—the power that imposes form through conflict and limitation. The color is thus the visual equivalent of the Sephirah's function: to cut, to burn, to separate, and to purify.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Bright scarlet is the color of Mars. The planet of war, of iron, of the red desert, and of the god of the same name, Mars is the astrological symbol of Geburah. The correspondence is direct and ancient: the red of blood, the red of rust, the red of the angry sky. In the system of Liber 777, this color is the fixed point for the Martian current on the Emperor Scale, linking the Sephirah to the planet and to the formula of the pentagram in its aspect of judgment.
Historical context
The use of scarlet as a color of power and judgment is older than the Qabalah itself. In the Hebrew Bible, scarlet thread was used in the rituals of purification (Leviticus 14:4-6) and in the garments of the High Priest (Exodus 28:5-6). The Roman emperors wore purple, but the scarlet of the cardinal's hat and of the military uniform is a direct descendant of this symbolism. In the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, from which Liber 777 emerged, the color was assigned to Geburah in the Emperor Scale as part of a comprehensive system of correspondences that sought to map all of reality onto the Tree of Life. The choice was not arbitrary: it was based on the color's association with fire, with the element of the same name, and with the Sephirah's position as the fifth, the number of Mars in the planetary sequence.
In the table of Liber 777, bright scarlet appears as the fifth step of the Emperor Scale, directly opposite the white brilliance of Keter and the dark brown of Binah. It is the color of the active, masculine principle in its most destructive and creative aspect—the force that breaks the vessels so that the light may shine through.
Closing
In the table of Liber 777, bright scarlet is the color of Geburah on the Emperor Scale of Colour. It is the color of the fifth Sephirah, of Mars, of the sword, and of the fire that burns away the dross. It is a color of action, of judgment, and of the unyielding will that makes all transformation possible.
