The Emperor Scale of Colour (v) · Path 30

Rich amber

Rich amber is a deep, warm, translucent golden-brown hue, named after the fossilized tree resin prized since antiquity for its color and electrostatic properties. The word 'amber' derives from Arabic anbar (ambergris), later transferred to the fossil resin. In the Emperor Scale of Colour, it represents the fully ripened, solar-golden aspect of Tiphareth—the sphere of the Sun—as it descends into the denser, more materialized expression of the Path of the Emperor (Path 30).

Position on the Tree of Life

This color occupies the 30th step of the Emperor Scale, corresponding to the 30th Path (Resh, the Sun) that connects Tiphareth (Beauty) to Netzach (Victory). It is the solar gold of Tiphareth made dense and earthy—the light of the Sun as it appears through the lens of material form, no longer the pure white brilliance of Kether or the rich salmon of Tiphareth itself, but a more saturated, honeyed amber.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Rich amber is the color of the Sun in its most material and generative aspect—the Sun as the source of life, warmth, and gold, but also of the fixed, crystallized essence of solar energy. It corresponds to the Hebrew letter Resh (ר), the Sun card (Atu XIX) in the Tarot, and the element of Fire in its most stable, generative form. This is the Sun not as blinding brilliance, but as the ripening force that turns green fields to gold and resin to amber.

Historical context

The Emperor Scale of Colour, as given in Aleister Crowley's Liber 777 (1909), derives from the color scales of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The scale itself is named after the Emperor (Atu IV), the card of Aries and the element of Fire in its most authoritative, structured expression. The color 'rich amber' appears here as the 30th step, a unique assignment that blends the solar gold of Tiphareth with the earthy, fixed quality of the Emperor's throne. In earlier Golden Dawn color scales, this path was sometimes given as 'amber' or 'golden amber,' but Crowley's specification of 'rich' emphasizes its saturation and depth—a color that is both luminous and dense, like the fossilized resin that preserves ancient life. The choice of amber for this path also echoes the alchemical lapis philosophorum in its golden stage, the citrinitas or yellowing that precedes the final red. In the system of correspondences, this color is the materialized solar essence, the Sun's light trapped in substance—a fitting symbol for the Emperor's power made manifest in the world.

Rich amber appears in Table 777 at the 30th step of the Emperor Scale of Colour, as the color of Path 30 (Resh, the Sun) in the column of the Emperor (v). It is the solar gold of Tiphareth made dense and earthy, the light of the Sun as it appears through the lens of material form.
