The Emperor Scale of Colour (v) · Path 21

Rich purple

Rich purple is a deep, saturated violet hue, historically the most expensive and prestigious dye in the ancient world. The term derives from the Latin purpura, itself from Greek porphyra, the name of the sea snail from which Tyrian purple was extracted. This color has been synonymous with imperial power, sacred mystery, and the highest spiritual attainment for millennia.

Position on the Tree of Life

Rich purple is the Emperor Scale (Scale 5) color assigned to Path 21, which connects Chesed (Mercy) to Malkuth (Kingdom). This path is attributed to the Hebrew letter Kaph (כ), meaning "palm of the hand" or "fist." The Emperor Scale represents the most active, masculine, and authoritative aspect of the color, suitable for the path that channels the expansive energy of Jupiter down into the material world.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Path 21 is governed by Jupiter (Tzedek), the planet of expansion, wisdom, and benevolent authority. Rich purple thus embodies the highest expression of Jupiterian energy—not mere luck or growth, but the conscious, royal authority that comes from spiritual understanding. This aligns with the traditional association of purple with royalty and the priesthood.

Historical context

The association of purple with supreme authority predates the Hebrew Qabalah by millennia. Tyrian purple, produced from the mucus of Murex snails, was worth its weight in silver and was reserved for Roman emperors and senators. In the Hebrew tradition, the tekhelet (blue-violet) dye used in the priestly garments and tzitzit was similarly precious and sacred.

In the Hermetic Qabalah, the Emperor Scale colors derive from the system of the Four Worlds (Atziluth, Beriah, Yetzirah, Assiah). The Emperor Scale corresponds to the World of Beriah (Creation), the archetypal world of pure intellect and authority. Rich purple at this step thus represents the intellectual and spiritual authority of Jupiter as it descends into form.

Crowley, in The Book of Thoth, describes the Path of Kaph as "the path of the Magus" and associates it with the Tarot card The Wheel of Fortune. The rich purple color here signifies the highest turn of the wheel—the moment when divine authority manifests in the world, not through force, but through the weight of wisdom and the splendor of truth.

In Liber 777

In the table, rich purple appears as the Emperor Scale color for Path 21, standing in contrast to the other scales: the King Scale (Atziluth) gives "Bright yellow" for this path, while the Queen Scale (Yetzirah) gives "Blue" and the Empress Scale (Assiah) gives "Gold flecked with white." The Emperor Scale's rich purple thus represents the active, authoritative, and masculine expression of Jupiter's energy—the royal decree of the universe made manifest.
