The Emperor Scale of Colour (v) · Path 14
Early spring green
Early spring green is a pale, fresh green hue, reminiscent of the first tender leaves and grass emerging after winter. Its name evokes the exact moment when the world shifts from dormancy to growth—a colour of nascent life, delicate yet determined.
Position on the Tree of Life
This colour is assigned to Path 14 (Daleth) in the Emperor Scale of Colour. Daleth, meaning “door,” is the Hebrew letter attributed to Venus. The Emperor Scale is the Briatic scale, representing the world of creation, so early spring green here signifies the creative, formative aspect of Venus—the opening of possibility, the first push of life through soil.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Early spring green is the colour of Venus in the Emperor Scale. Venus rules love, beauty, harmony, and the natural cycles of growth. The hue captures Venus’s gentler, generative side: not the full bloom of summer but the promise of it, the green of new leaves on a vine or the first grass after snowmelt.
Historical context
The colour scales of Liber 777 derive from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn’s system of correspondences. The Emperor Scale (Briah) is one of four scales (King, Queen, Emperor, Empress) that map colours to the Sephiroth and paths according to the Four Worlds. Early spring green appears specifically for Path 14, where it replaces the more saturated greens of other scales. In the Golden Dawn’s original manuscripts, this colour was described as “pale green” or “spring green,” and its placement on the Tree of Life links it to the Sephirah Chokmah (Wisdom) through the path of Daleth, though the colour itself is not a Sephirah colour but a path colour. The choice of “early spring” rather than “emerald” or “leaf” green emphasizes the transitional, opening quality of Daleth—the door that leads from the supernal triad into the rest of the Tree.
In Liber 777, early spring green is the Emperor Scale colour for Path 14, standing alongside other path colours such as blue emerald green (Path 11) and cold pale blue (Path 13). It is a specific, non‑generic hue that carries the weight of Venusian symbolism: love as a creative force, the beauty of beginnings, and the green of the earth’s first awakening.
