The Emperor Scale of Colour (v) · Path 15
Brilliant flame
Brilliant flame is a color designation that appears in the Emperor Scale of Colour, a system of color correspondences used in Hermetic Qabalah. The term evokes a vivid, intense fire—neither the pure white of a gas flame nor the smoky orange of embers, but a sharp, luminous yellow-white or golden-white, as if the fire itself has been refined to its most essential and blinding expression. In the context of the Qabalistic color scales, it stands as a specific hue on the path of the Middle Pillar, distinct from the pure brilliance of Keter or the fiery red of Geburah.
Position on the Tree of Life
This color is assigned to Path 15, which connects Chokmah (Wisdom) to Tiphereth (Beauty) on the Tree of Life. Path 15 is the path of the Hebrew letter Heh, the window, and is associated with the astrological sign of Aries. The brilliant flame here is the color of the Emperor Scale for this path, a scale that corresponds to the active, masculine, or 'royal' aspect of creation. It is the color of the fire that bridges the supernal wisdom of Chokmah with the central beauty of Tiphereth.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Path 15 is governed by Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars. The 'brilliant flame' thus carries the martial, initiatory energy of Aries—the spark that begins all action. It is the fire of the Ram, charging forward, unquenchable and pure. This is not the destructive fire of Geburah (which is bright scarlet), but the creative, generative fire that forges new paths and illuminates the way.
Historical context
The Emperor Scale of Colour is one of four major color scales in the Hermetic Qabalah, as systematized by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later published by Aleister Crowley in Liber 777. The scale is named after the Emperor card in the Tarot (Atu IV), which itself corresponds to the astrological sign of Aries. The color 'brilliant flame' for Path 15 is therefore a direct expression of the Emperor's nature: authority, structure, and the will to manifest.
In the original Golden Dawn manuscripts, the color scales were derived from the four worlds of the Qabalah: Atziluth (Archetypal), Briah (Creative), Yetzirah (Formative), and Assiah (Material). The Emperor Scale corresponds to the world of Yetzirah, the formative world, where abstract archetypes begin to take on distinct shape and color. The 'brilliant flame' on Path 15 is thus the formative fire that gives structure to the raw wisdom of Chokmah, making it accessible to the lower sephiroth.
Crowley, in The Book of Thoth, describes the Emperor as 'the father of the gods and men,' and the color of his path is the fire that both creates and commands. This flame is not the gentle warmth of the hearth, but the blazing light of the sun at noon, the fire that reveals all things and burns away illusion.
In Liber 777
In the tables of Liber 777, the entry for Path 15 under the Emperor Scale of Colour is simply 'Brilliant flame.' It stands as a singular, intense color, unmodified by flecks or shades, representing the pure, active fire of the formative world on the path of the Emperor.
