Deep purple

Deep purple is a color of profound density and saturation, a hue that sits at the intersection of the visible spectrum's longest and shortest wavelengths. Its name derives from the Latin purpura, itself from the Greek porphyra, the shellfish from which the ancient Tyrian dye was extracted—a substance so rare and costly it became synonymous with imperial authority. In the context of the Hermetic Qabalah, this specific shade is not merely a decorative note but a precise glyph for a specific divine emanation.

Position on the Tree of Life

This deep purple is the color of Chesed, the fourth Sephirah on the Tree of Life. Chesed is the sphere of Mercy, Love, and Majesty, the first of the pillars of manifestation. As the color on the Emperor Scale (the scale of the divine names and archetypal forces), this deep purple signifies the overwhelming, expansive, and kingly nature of the force that flows from the supernal triad into the world of creation. It is the color of the water of Chesed, the great sea of mercy that sustains all forms.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

Chesed is associated with the sphere of Jupiter (Tzedek, "Righteousness"). The deep purple of this Sephirah thus carries the astrological signature of Jupiter's beneficence, expansion, and authority. It is the color of the king on his throne, the judge dispensing justice, and the philosopher contemplating the laws of the universe. This is not the violent red of Mars (Geburah) but the calm, authoritative purple of a sovereign whose power is so absolute it needs no display of force.

Historical context

The use of purple as a symbol of divine and earthly kingship is ancient and cross-cultural. In the Hebrew tradition, the tekhelet (a blue-violet dye) was used for the fringes of the priestly garments and the curtains of the Tabernacle, a color representing the heavens and the divine presence. The Roman emperors adopted Tyrian purple as their exclusive prerogative, a practice continued by the Byzantine court. In alchemical and Hermetic literature, purple is the color of the cauda pavonis (peacock's tail), the stage of the Great Work where all colors appear and the Stone is perfected. For the Qabalists of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Emperor Scale of Color was a direct revelation, a system of correspondences that mapped the divine names, archangels, and planetary forces onto a chromatic spectrum. The deep purple of Chesed on this scale is thus a synthesis of these traditions: the royal purple of the emperor, the merciful water of Jupiter, and the perfected color of the alchemical king.

In Liber 777, this deep purple appears as the color of Chesed on the Emperor Scale. It is the fixed, authoritative expression of the Sephirah's nature, distinct from the lighter, more fluid colors of the Queen Scale (which correspond to the archangelic realms). This deep purple is the color of the divine name El, of the archangel Tzadkiel, and of the order of the Chasmalim (the Brilliant Ones). It is the color one would visualize when invoking the merciful and majestic power of the fourth Sephirah, a hue that holds the gravity of law and the warmth of boundless love.
