Angels of elements
The Angels of Elements, known in Hebrew as the Kerubim (often translated as "the Strong Ones" or "the Mighty"), are the celestial intelligences that govern the vital, formative forces of the universe. They represent the spiritual archetypes of the four elements—Fire, Water, Air, and Earth—acting as the energetic matrix that translates divine ideas into physical reality. Rather than being mere physical elements, they are the living, conscious currents of the astral light that direct the flow of energy into material manifestation.
Position on the Tree of Life
Within the Qabbalistic Tree of Life, the Angels of Elements are assigned to Yesod, the ninth Sephirah, which translates to "Foundation." Yesod is the sphere of the Moon and the astral engine of the cosmos. It is here that the energies of the upper Sephiroth are gathered, purified, and organized. The Kerubim reside in this sphere to act as the direct agents of crystallization, structuring the astral light into the elemental patterns that will ultimately manifest in Malkuth, the physical world.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
As the angelic order of Yesod, the Angels of Elements are intimately linked to the Moon, which rules the tides, the subconscious, and the astral plane. Furthermore, they find their macrocosmic expression in the four fixed signs of the Zodiac, which represent the elemental pillars of the heavens: Leo (Fire), Scorpio (Water), Aquarius (Air), and Taurus (Earth). Through these astrological gateways, the Kerubim channel the cosmic forces into the terrestrial sphere.
Historical context
The concept of the Kerubim originates in ancient Near Eastern mythology, where they were depicted as winged bulls or lions with human faces, guarding temples and palaces. In the Hebrew Bible, they first appear in Genesis as the guardians of the Garden of Eden, armed with a flaming sword to bar the way to the Tree of Life. Ezekiel’s vision of the Chariot (Merkabah) describes them as complex beings with four faces—man, lion, ox, and eagle—symbolizing their dominion over all creation.
In medieval Qabbalah and later Hermetic traditions, these four faces were systematically mapped to the four elements. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn integrated the Angels of Elements deeply into their initiatory rituals, associating them with the cardinal directions, the Watchtowers, and the purification of the temple space. They are viewed as the ultimate guardians of the elemental thresholds, ensuring that the magician balances the elemental forces within their own sphere of sensation.
In the system of Liber 777, the Angels of Elements are positioned at the 9th key scale, representing the active, formative angelic forces of Assiah (the material world of action) operating through the lunar foundation of Yesod.
