Brilliant ones
The "Brilliant ones," known in Hebrew as the Chashmalim (הַשְׁמַלִּים), are an exalted order of angelic beings whose name denotes a state of glowing, scintillating brightness. Derived from the biblical term chashmal—traditionally translated as "amber" or "electrum"—they represent the radiant, flashing energy of divine benevolence and the majestic illumination that emanates from the supreme source.
Position on the Tree of Life
Within the structure of the Tree of Life, the Brilliant ones are positioned at the fourth Sephirah, Chesed (Mercy). This sphere represents the first manifestation of the divine will below the Abyss, characterized by expansion, unlimited giving, and cosmic order. The Chashmalim act as the active agents of this sphere, transforming the raw, unformed light of the supernals into the structured, merciful laws that govern the universe.
Astrological and planetary correspondence
Corresponding to Chesed, the Brilliant ones are intimately linked with the planet Jupiter (Hebrew: Tzedek, meaning Justice or Righteousness). This planetary force governs growth, spiritual authority, generosity, and the preservation of cosmic harmony, reflecting the luminous and magnanimous nature of the Chashmalim.
Historical context
The primary biblical source for the Chashmalim is the Book of Ezekiel (1:4), where the prophet beholds a whirlwind out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, "and brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof as the color of amber [chashmal], out of the midst of the fire." This mysterious substance, blending the qualities of gold and silver or glowing metal, came to symbolize the innermost, dazzling aura of the Divine.
In the classical angelic hierarchies, such as that compiled by Maimonides in the Yad ha-Chazakah, the Chashmalim are ranked fourth among the ten angelic orders. Kabbalistic texts, including the Zohar, describe them as beings of pure, brilliant light who execute the decrees of grace and sustain the structural integrity of the lower worlds. In modern Hebrew, the word chashmal has been adopted to mean "electricity," a fitting linguistic evolution for an order of beings defined by brilliant, flowing energy.
In Liber 777, the Brilliant ones appear under the 4th Key Scale, serving as the English translation for the angelic order of Chesed. They stand as the luminous mediators of the Jupiterian current, bridging the gap between the infinite light of the supernals and the structured reality of the lower Sephiroth.
