Wheels

The Wheels (Hebrew: Ophanim or Auphanim, אוֹפַנִּים) are a celestial class of angelic beings characterized by their dynamic, revolving nature and their direct association with the primal force of cosmic motion. Translating literally to "wheels," their movement represents the transition from unmanifest potentiality to kinetic manifestation, acting as the cosmic gears that drive the universe.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, the Wheels are assigned to Chokmah, the second Sephirah. As the angelic choir operating within this sphere of Wisdom, they translate the supreme, unmanifest light of Kether into the first active, swirling motion of the cosmos. They represent the dynamic energy of the Divine Father, initiating the cosmic dance before form is established in the third Sephirah.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

In Hermetic Qabalah, Chokmah and the Ophanim are directly linked to the Mazloth—the Sphere of the Zodiac or the Fixed Stars. The "wheels" themselves are often interpreted as the great celestial wheel of the constellations, spinning through the night sky and distributing the diverse, primordial forces of the cosmos across the universe.

Historical Context

The primary source for the Ophanim is the biblical Book of Ezekiel (1:15–21), where the prophet beholds them alongside the Chayot (Holy Living Creatures). Ezekiel describes them as wheels of beryl, "wheels within wheels," whose rims are full of eyes, moving wherever the spirit directs them without turning. In the apocryphal Book of Enoch, they are grouped with the Cherubim and Seraphim as the sleepless ones who guard the throne of glory. In later Jewish liturgy and Kabbalistic texts like the Zohar, the Ophanim are depicted as exalted beings of pure light who praise the Divine with a rushing, thunderous sound, symbolizing the perpetual motion of the cosmos.

In Liber 777, the "Wheels" appear in Column C (Angelic Orders) at the second key scale (Chokmah). Here, they represent the active, rotating force of the Zodiac, manifesting the divine wisdom of the second Sephirah through the perpetual, rhythmic motion of the stars.
