Flames

The Flames (derived from the Hebrew Ishim, אִישִׁים, meaning "men" or "personages," but esoterically translated as "Souls of Fire" or "Flames") are the angelic entities that govern the threshold of the material world. Unlike the remote, cosmic intelligences of the higher Sephiroth, the Flames are intimately bound to the human condition, representing the spark of the divine intellect localized within physical form. They are the fiery agents of life that dance within the heart of all created things.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, the Flames are positioned at the tenth Sephirah, Malkuth (the Kingdom). This represents the final descent of divine energy into physical manifestation. Operating at this scale step, the Flames act as the energetic foundation of the physical universe, transforming raw matter into a living, breathing vessel for spirit. They are the closest angelic order to humanity, serving as the immediate guardians of the physical plane.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

As the angelic order of Malkuth, the Flames correspond to the Sphere of the Elements (Cholom Yesodoth) and the planet Earth. They operate within this sublunary realm, guiding the elemental forces of Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. The Flames ensure that the spiritual currents emanating from the higher Sephiroth are properly grounded, stabilized, and manifested within the physical laws of nature.

Historical Context

In classical Kabbalistic literature, particularly in Maimonides' Mishneh Torah, the Ishim are ranked as the tenth order of angels. Maimonides describes them as the angels who interface directly with prophets, speaking to them in visions and igniting the human intellect with divine inspiration.

In the Zohar, the Flames are often associated with the souls of the righteous who have ascended to a fiery, angelic state. This dual nature—both angelic messengers and perfected human souls—highlights their role as cosmic mediators. They are the "burning ones" who ignite the spark of spiritual aspiration in the human heart, urging the soul to climb back up the Jacob's Ladder toward the higher realms.

In the context of Liber 777, the "Flames" appear at scale step 10 under the English translation of the angelic orders (Column C). This placement emphasizes their role as the final, active agents of the divine will, manifesting the primordial, fiery essence of Keter within the physical kingdom of Malkuth.
