Kings

The Kings (Hebrew: Melakim, מְלָכִים) are the celestial choir or angelic order charged with transmitting the energies of Tiphereth, the central sphere of the Tree of Life. Representing the principle of divine sovereignty, balance, and spiritual beauty, these beings act as the vitalizing heart of the angelic hierarchy. They are the forces of integration, transforming raw cosmic power into structured, harmonious life.

Position on the Tree of Life

On the Tree of Life, the Kings are positioned at the sixth Sephirah, Tiphereth (Beauty). This sphere sits at the absolute center of the diagram, acting as a mediator between the supreme crown of Kether and the physical manifestation of Malkuth. The Kings function as the active agents of this central hub, balancing the expansive mercy of Chesed and the contractive severity of Geburah. Through their influence, the diverse forces of the Ruach (the conscious mind) are unified into a singular, coherent ego-consciousness aligned with the Higher Self.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

The Kings are directly aligned with the Sun (Sol). This planetary association emphasizes their role as sources of spiritual illumination, warmth, and life-giving energy. Just as the physical sun holds the solar system in its gravitational embrace, the Kings act as the spiritual gravity that holds the human psyche and the cosmos in harmonious orbit. Their energy is golden, radiant, and centralizing, corresponding to the alchemical gold and the heart center in the subtle body.

Historical Context

In traditional Jewish angelology, particularly in the writings of Maimonides (Yad ha-Chazakah), the Melakim are recognized as a distinct order of angels. The word itself is derived from the Hebrew root for "king" or "ruler," signifying their authority to execute the divine will and maintain cosmic order.

In the Zohar and subsequent Kabbalistic literature, the Kings are described as the forces that govern the laws of nature and the moral order of the universe. They are not tyrannical rulers, but rather the ideal of the "Philosopher King"—sovereigns who rule through perfect justice tempered by love. In Hermetic Qabalah, they are invoked to assist the initiate in achieving the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel, as Tiphereth is the locus of this sacred union.

In the context of Liber 777, the "Kings" appear at the 6th key scale (Tiphereth) as the English translation of the angelic order Melakim. Here, they stand as the supreme exemplars of solar consciousness and the harmonizing intelligence that guides the middle pillar.
