Sons of God

The Sons of God (Hebrew: Bene Elohim or Beni Elohim, בְּנֵי הָאֱלֹהִים) are a distinct order of angelic beings within Qabbalistic and biblical cosmology. Translating literally as "sons of the gods" or "children of the divine powers," they represent the division of the singular, undifferentiated divine light into a multitude of individual, self-conscious sparks of intellect. They are the messengers who carry out the specific, structured designs of the cosmos.

Position on the Tree of Life

In the Qabbalistic Tree of Life, the Sons of God are the angelic order assigned to Hod, the eighth Sephirah. Hod represents Splendour, the sphere of the concrete intellect, magic, and formal structure. Within this sphere, the Bene Elohim act as the active agents of the divine mind, translating the grand solar visions of Tiphereth and the emotional impulses of Netzach into logical, structured, and communicable systems. They represent the intellectualized forces that govern language, mathematics, and the laws of magic.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

As the angelic order of Hod, the Sons of God are intimately aligned with the planet Mercury (Kochab). This planetary force governs communication, writing, commerce, and intellectual agility. The Bene Elohim embody this mercurial energy by acting as divine scribes and messengers, facilitating the flow of information between the higher spiritual realms and the material world. Their nature is fluid, analytical, and highly adaptable.

Historical Context

The phrase "Sons of God" appears in several of the oldest strata of the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis 6:2, they are described as taking wives from the daughters of men, a passage that heavily influenced later Enochic literature, where they are identified with the Watchers (Grigori) who descended to Earth to teach humanity the arts of magic, astrology, and metalworking. In the Book of Job (1:6, 38:7), they appear as members of the heavenly council who "shouted for joy" at the creation of the world.

In medieval Qabbalah, particularly in the angelic hierarchies compiled by Maimonides and later integrated into Western Hermeticism, the Bene Elohim were stripped of their fallen, mythological associations and established firmly as holy ministers of the eighth sphere. They represent the divine intellect operating through the laws of nature and logic, serving under the direction of the Archangel Michael (or Raphael, depending on the specific system of correspondence).

Presence in Liber 777

In Aleister Crowley's Liber 777, the "Sons of God" appear in Column C (Angelic Orders) at the eighth scale step (Hod). They serve as the English translation and esoteric equivalent of the Hebrew Beni Elohim, representing the specific choir of angels that a magician invokes when working with the mercurial, intellectual, and ritualistic energies of the eighth Sephirah.
