Amnitziel

Amnitziel is a geomantic intelligence, a named spirit or angelic force derived from the interpretive tradition of the sixteen geomantic figures (the Baetyli). Its name is constructed in the common Hebrew angelic suffix -el (meaning "God") combined with a root likely drawn from the geomantic figure Amissio (Latin for "loss"), which corresponds to the sixteenth path. Thus Amnitziel can be read as "the intelligence of loss" or "the angel of Amissio," governing the specific geomantic current of deprivation, scattering, and necessary release.

Position on the Tree of Life

Amnitziel is assigned to Path 29 on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. This path runs between Netzach (Victory, sphere of Venus) and Malkuth (the Kingdom, the material world). As such, it is a connective channel that brings the aesthetic, instinctual, and relational energies of Netzach into concrete physical expression. Its scale step (29) places it among the lower paths, bridging the sephiroth that govern feeling and manifestation.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

In the geomantic system, each figure and its attendant intelligence corresponds to a zodiacal sign or planetary influence. Amnitziel—as the intelligence of the figure Amissio—is traditionally linked to Virgo, the mutable earth sign, and to Mercury in its role as the planet of analysis, assessment, and discriminatory subtraction. This reinforces the nature of Amnitziel as a force that refines through removal, stripping away the superfluous or the harmful so that a purer form may remain.

Historical Context

The geomatic intelligences are a relatively late synthesis within the Western esoteric tradition, formalized in the Renaissance grimoires and later systematized in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The names of the thirty-six geomantic intelligences—one for each of the sixteen figures and their reverse or shadow aspects—first appear in manuscript form in the De Geomantia tradition and were codified in Crowley's Liber 777 (1909).

Amnitziel derives specifically from the figure Amissio, which depicts two odd points in the first and second houses, then one odd (two even) in the third and fourth houses: ●● / ●● / ●○ / ●○. This pattern is geomantically "unbalanced," indicating a point of rupture in a pattern of gain. In divinatory practice, Amissio signifies loss, a thing slipping away, or a situation where something must be surrendered for equilibrium to return. Amnitziel is therefore the spiritual intelligence that presides over this process—not a malevolent force but a necessary agent of the natural cycle of dissolution that permits renewal.

In the Astrology of the Geomantic Intelligences as taught in the Golden Dawn, Amnitziel is invoked when a querent must understand what is to be relinquished and how to release it gracefully. Its intelligence is sharp, analytical, and detached; it does not mourn loss but rather maps its contours and consequences.

Position in Liber 777

In the table of correspondences for Liber 777, Amnitziel appears at Row CLXXVII (17), under the column "Geomantic Intelligences," at Path 29. It stands among a sequence of named angelic rulers of the geomantic figures, linking the abstract symbols of the earth oracle to the personal and operative hierarchy of the celestial spheres. As the intelligence of Amissio, Amnitziel is the key to working consciously with the principle of subtraction in both magical practice and the interpretation of the sixteen-fold oracle.
