Zuriel

Zuriel (צוּרִיאֵל) is an angelic intelligence whose name derives from the Hebrew tzur (“rock”) and El (“God”), meaning “Rock of God” or “God is my rock.” In the geomantic tradition, he is one of the sixteen angelic governors that preside over the geomantic figures, each figure being a pattern of earth‑divination. Liber 777 places Zuriel at the 22nd path of the Tree of Life.

Position on the Tree of Life

Path 22 is the 22nd path of the 32 paths of Wisdom, connecting the sephirah Chesed (Mercy, 4) to Geburah (Severity, 5). It corresponds to the Hebrew letter Lamed (ל) and, in the Golden Dawn / Thoth system, to the Tarot Trump Justice (Adjustment). Zuriel is the geomantic intelligence that governs the forces operating on this path—a channel that balances the expansive mercy of Chesed with the restrictive severity of Geburah.

Astrological and planetary correspondence

While Zuriel himself is not directly assigned a planet or zodiac sign in the Geomantic Intelligences column, the path he inhabits (Lamed) is astrologically linked to Libra, the Scales. This reinforces the theme of equilibrium and judgment that characterizes both the path and the geomantic figure associated with it. In practice, Zuriel’s influence may be invoked when seeking clarity, fair decision, or the harmonizing of opposing forces in a geomantic reading.

Historical context

The name Zuriel appears in the Hebrew Bible (Numbers 3:35) as the name of a Levite chief, but its angelic usage emerges in Renaissance occultism. Cornelius Agrippa, in his Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1533), lists the angels of the geomantic figures, drawing on earlier Arabic and Jewish sources. Francis Barrett’s The Magus (1801) repeats and expands these lists, and it is from this lineage that the Geomantic Intelligences column in Liber 777 is derived. Zuriel is the intelligence of the geomantic figure that corresponds to Path 22—likely the figure Conjunctio (Union) or Fortuna Minor (Lesser Fortune), depending on the source. In the Golden Dawn and Crowley’s synthesis, these angels were systematized into the 777 schema, giving each path a specific geomantic angel. Zuriel is less celebrated than archangels such as Raphael or Gabriel, but he holds a precise function: he is the angelic guide for geomantic operations that align with the path of Lamed, aiding the practitioner in discerning the rock‑solid truth beneath shifting appearances.

In table 777, at step 22 (Path 22), the Geomantic Intelligences cell lists Zuriel, indicating his role as the angelic governor for geomantic work keyed to this path—a being whose name itself promises stability and divine foundation.
