Verachiel

Verachiel is a geomantic intelligence, a guiding spirit or angelic force invoked in the practice of geomancy—a divinatory system that interprets patterns formed by earth or sand. The name Verachiel (also spelled Verachiel, Verachiel, or Verachiel) is derived from Hebrew roots: verach (light) and El (God), thus meaning 'God's light' or 'illumination of God.' This etymology points to its role as a bringer of clarity, revelation, and divine insight within geomantic operations.

Position on the Tree of Life

Verachiel is assigned to Path 19 on the Tree of Life, which connects the sephiroth Hod (Splendor) and Netzach (Victory). This path is associated with the astrological sign Leo and the element of Fire, reflecting themes of creative expression, willpower, and the radiant energy of the sun. As a geomantic intelligence on this path, Verachiel governs the geomantic figure Fortuna Major (the Greater Fortune), a figure of success, protection, and beneficial outcomes.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

Verachiel corresponds to the zodiac sign Leo (the Lion) and the planet Jupiter in its exaltation. This alignment reinforces its nature as a force of magnanimity, leadership, and expansive good fortune. In geomantic practice, Verachiel is invoked to secure victory in endeavors, to protect against harm, and to attract favorable circumstances. Its energy is solar, regal, and generous, embodying the noble qualities of the lion.

Historical Context

The earliest known listing of Verachiel appears in the Sepher Raziel (Book of Raziel), a medieval grimoire of angelic and magical lore. This text, attributed to the legendary figure of King Solomon, catalogs angels and their correspondences to the planets, zodiac signs, and geomantic figures. Verachiel is specifically named as the intelligence of the geomantic figure Fortuna Major, which is derived from the Hebrew letters Kaph and Resh (forming the word Kaphar, meaning 'to cover' or 'to atone').

In the Renaissance magical tradition, Verachiel is invoked in the Heptameron of Peter of Abano, a key grimoire of the period. There, it is listed among the angels of the day and night, with specific instructions for summoning its aid. The 17th-century occultist Athanasius Kircher also mentions Verachiel in his Oedipus Aegyptiacus, linking it to the geomantic system of the Ars Geomantiae.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn systematized geomantic correspondences, placing Verachiel on Path 19 of the Tree of Life. This assignment was later adopted by Aleister Crowley in his Liber 777, where Verachiel appears in the column for Geomantic Intelligences.

In Liber 777

In Liber 777, Verachiel is listed in the table row for Geomantic Intelligences (CLXXVII.*), at the scale step corresponding to Path 19. Its presence here aligns it with the geomantic figure Fortuna Major and the astrological sign Leo. This placement emphasizes its role as a celestial guide for those seeking success, protection, and the illumination of divine will through geomantic divination.
