Cambriel

Cambriel is the geomantic intelligence of the figure Laetitia (the Greater Fortune), a spirit of joy, fulfillment, and the favorable outcome of a matter. The name likely derives from the Hebrew root kaph-mem-bet (כמב), meaning 'to long for' or 'to desire,' combined with the suffix -el (אל), 'God,' thus translating to 'Desire of God' or 'Longing of God.' This intelligence governs the positive, expansive, and harmonious forces within geomancy, representing the culmination of favorable influences and the attainment of a desired goal.

Position on the Tree of Life

Cambriel is assigned to Path 28, which connects Netzach (Victory, sphere of Venus) to Yesod (Foundation, sphere of the Moon). This path represents the power of imagination and the ability to bring desire into form. Cambriel's presence here underscores the role of joyful expectation and emotional fulfillment in the alchemical process of manifestation.

Astrological and Planetary Correspondence

While not directly tied to a single planet in the standard 777 schema, Cambriel's geomantic figure Laetitia is associated with the benefic aspects of Jupiter and Venus, particularly in their exaltations. The intelligence channels the expansive, fortunate, and creative energies of these planets, but filtered through the lunar gateway of Yesod, making it a force of emotional and imaginative fulfillment rather than raw material success.

Historical Context

Cambriel appears in the grimoire tradition of geomantic intelligences, a system systematized in the Renaissance but with roots in Arabic and Hebrew angelology. The earliest known listing of the 16 geomantic intelligences—including Cambriel—is found in the Heptameron of Pietro d'Abano (c. 1250–1316), though the text itself was likely compiled in the 16th century. In this system, each geomantic figure is governed by a specific intelligence that can be invoked to reveal the figure's meaning or to direct its influence.

Later, in the 17th century, the English occultist Robert Turner included these intelligences in his translation of the Ars Notoria and other works. The names were subsequently adopted by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, who integrated them into their elaborate system of correspondences. In the Golden Dawn's Book T, Cambriel is specifically linked to the geomantic figure Laetitia, described as "the Greater Fortune, joy, gladness, and mirth."

Aleister Crowley's Liber 777 codified this correspondence, placing Cambriel at Path 28. The intelligence is thus part of a broader schema where each geomantic figure is assigned a path on the Tree of Life, linking the divinatory art to the Kabbalistic cosmology.

In Liber 777

In the table at Path 28, Cambriel appears as the Geomantic Intelligence, governing the figure Laetitia. This placement aligns it with the Hebrew letter Kaph (the palm of the hand, symbolizing grasping and fulfillment) and the astrological sign of Jupiter in its watery, emotional aspect. The intelligence is invoked for matters of joy, success, and the harmonious resolution of conflicts, but always with an understanding that its power flows through the lunar realm of dreams and intuition.
